New iPad case/stand could revolutionize flying coach

Summary: If you own an iPad and you fly coach, then this just might be the product you never knew you couldn't live without!

If you've ever tried to use a laptop while flying coach, then you're well-aware of the precious little space afforded to you: typing is uncomfortable, there's nowhere to set your ginger ale after the sweet flight attendant pours it for you, the person in front of you decides to lean their chair back, etc. If you're an iPad owner, then you know how much better life is when flying coach; however, what if I told you it could be even better?

Just recently posted to Kickstarter, a Web site where people can crowd-source project funding, is a project called Arctic Flight. Check it out in the short demonstration video below:

If you've never heard of Kickstarter, it's a Web site where people present their idea to the public and create various donation packages for potential backers to fork out the money for. As for Arctic Flight, here are the backing options currently listed:

$75 or more (limited reward): 1 Arctic Flight holder for the iPad 2, shipped free in the U.S. within 60 days of the close of the Kickstarter project. (Estimated delivery: August 2012)

$75 or more (when limited expires): 1 Arctic Flight holder for the iPad 2, shipped free in the U.S. within 90 days of the close of the Kickstarter project. (Estimated delivery: September 2012)

$80 or more: 1 Arctic Flight holder for the new iPad, shipped free in the U.S. within 90 days of the close of the Kickstarter project. (Estimated delivery: September 2012)

$145 or more (limited reward): 2 Arctic Flight holders for the iPad 2, shipped free to one address in the U.S. within 60 days of the close of the Kickstarter project. (Estimated delivery: August 2012)

$675 or more: 10 Arctic Flight holders for the iPad 2, shipped free to one address in the U.S. within 90 days of the close of the Kickstarter project. (Estimated delivery: September 2012)

Up to this point, the only iPad accessory I've ever owned where cases/stands are concerned is the smart cover -- which, admittedly, has worked just fine up until now. But being a writer and enjoying the time to write when flying, the space this holder creates not only for a keyboard, but for my ginger ale as well, is quite appealing. I might pledge $80 for an Arctic Flight holder for the new iPad at some point in the near future, but for now, that seems just a bit too pricy for someone like me who flies maybe 2-4 times a year.

What are your thoughts? Does this look like a product you would like to have? If so, how do you feel about the price points being set at $75 and $80, respectively? Let me hear from you in the comments below!

  • What I find interesting is ....

That this is a SIMPLE solution to a travel problem. And with some minor modifications, it could be adjusted to support any tablet, no matter the brand.

Also .... I can see this as part of a RENTAL feature on long flights.

  • trying too hard to create hype?

Revolutionize is a word that's banded about too frequently these days. A tablet holder would not revolutionize anything other than the necks of its users.
