Que e-reader is cancelled due to delays, market changes

By | August 10, 2010, 3:12pm PDT

Summary: Plastic Logic finally kills its Que e-reader after several delays and an e-reader pricing war.

Plastic Logic, which has been showing prototypes of its Que e-reader for years now, finally pulled the plug on the product, in light of a changing marketplace.

That marketplace, of course, is the hotly competitive e-reader space that includes Amazon’s Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s Nook, both of which are now priced under $200. The Que had original starting price of $649. The company had already delayed the device a couple of times this year, following an appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.

Originally, expected to ship in April, the Que’s first delay was announced in March because of “technical work and optimization.” Then, a June ship date was missed and pre-orders were cancelled - but the company continued to back the product.

Today, the company CEO Richard Archuleta said it no longer made sense to move forward, given the changes in the market and their own delays. In a statement, via CNET, he said:

This was a hard decision, but is the best one for our company, our investors and our customers… We plan to take the necessary time needed to re-enter the market as we refocus, redesign and retool for our next generation ProReader product. We are fortunate to have investors who are confident and committed to our company’s long-term success in commercializing plastic electronics. We thank them, along with our partners and suppliers, and most especially our first customers, for their support, dedication and patience–and for standing with us to pioneer the plastic electronics revolution.

Very disappointing

I really thought this e-reader was the Holy Grail which would allow me to get even closer to a paper-less office by giving me the ability to take files with me to court hearings with its larger design, ability to organize files better than other e-readers, and its durability.

I guess I will wait for the 2nd generation e-reader from Plastic Logic.

I second what you said.

Only I dont know, after having waited for so long, if I will have the heart to wait to long time they take to deliver again, and deal with the risk of delays again.

But like you said there's no viable alternative right now with a large, e-ink, flexible display.

@wheres_my_stuff That flexible display was a hoax, in my opinion. The QUE, as presented, was just as "flexible" as the iPad.

QUE lost me since its "official" launch

That's when it was finally obvious that much of it was vapourware, not to say a hoax. The screen was undeniably bigger than most, but it was not nearly large enough to replace the ubiquitous Letter and A4 format. Furthermore, there was no possibility to extend its memory with additional SD cards. It looked more like an iPad style toy than like a device that is meant to be used for some real work.

The came the Skiff. Expandable, larger. But that one is already gone, before showing anything at all.

These are black days for those of us who want to use these devices for more than pulp literature.
