QWERTY faceoff: Droid 2 vs. Epic 4G vs. BlackBerry Torch

By | August 26, 2010, 8:05am PDT

Although most of the momentum in the smartphone world is happening around touchscreen devices, there are still plenty of people — especially many business professionals — who want a hardware keyboard.

There are three new high-end smartphones with hardware QWERTYs that have recently hit the market and I have been doing an old fashioned showdown with all three of them. I’ve put together a set of photos comparing the three devices and I’ve done a quick evaluation of each of the three keyboards.

Photo gallery

See a photo comparison of the three: Keyboard showdown: Droid 2 vs. Epic 4G vs. BlackBerry Torch.

Samsung Epic 4G

The Epic 4G has the most versatile keyboard of the three. It has a dedicated row for numbers and several special keys (search, back, home, smiley, etc.). The keys themselves are chicklet-style, reminiscent of Apple Macbooks and Sony Vaio laptops.

BlackBerry Torch 9800

The BlackBerry Torch has the traditional BlackBerry qwerty that has been around on high-end devices since the BlackBerry 8800 World Edition. It is a top quality keyboard with a nice weight to it and typically has a low error rate. Those who are already familiar with BlackBerry will love the standard feel.

Motorola Droid 2

The Droid 2 keyboard is the worst of the three. The keys are too flat and non-distinct and there are no special keys other than the arrow keys. The Droid 2 keyboard is better than the original Droid keyboard, but that’s not saying much. Most of the people I know who have a Droid bought it at least partly because of the physical keyboard. But those same people report that 90% of the time they never use it, since it’s so bad.

HTC Touch pro 2 release 1 year ago had a Qwerty Keyboard.
@filizaragoza@...

After phone shopping for over a year (patience is a virtue wink, I bought the Touch Pro 2, and I LOVE it! I looked at the iPhone and tons of others, but I do a lot of data entry on my phone, and those digital keyboards all drove me nuts! None of the other physical keyboards were as good as the Pro 2 either, so I got it, and I use the keyboard ALL the TIME! It's great! happy
@filizaragoza@... Point being?
I use the original Motorola Droid and use the keyboard all the time. It was one of the reasons I bought it in the first place.

My only complaint is when typing numbers, you have to hold the alt key. Other than that, love it!

I really love my Sprint service and support. I like their business model so much I bought stock. I live about three miles outside the Atlanta (Georgia, USA) 4G service area and spend a large portion of my workday in 4G territory. The only things holding me back from making the Evo update from my Treo 755P was the keyboard issue and the lack of FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) support. I really like the Evo and felt I could live with the touch keypad with a Swype install. Then I received the Sprint Galaxy S Pro (Epic) release info and I can't wait until August 31st. I still wish there was an Android solution similar to TCPMP (The Core Pocket Media Player) for my Treo and other "legacy" device OSes. TCPMP has never failed to play any media files I threw at it. Of course, playing 1080p video files required turning off the cellular radio to prevent major stuttering; though playback of hi-def files remained less than optimal, TCPMP would still forge on through. Now that there are several options for Android media playback, all of the other features and potential upgrades make leaving my over ten year deployment of PalmOS devices much easier. My wife pre-ordered (PRE-ordered) reserving her Palm Pre for release day pickup and has loved it from day one. It has a superior keyboard although other large fingered (as I am) reviewers were less than complimentary, I rate it right up there with the Treo and Blackberry qwerty boards. Thanks for giving my Samsung choice a shot in the arm, keyboard wise!
I have the Droid 2 and use the physical keyboard exclusively. While more defined keys would have been nice I appreciate the fact the Motorola was focused on the overall size and depth of the phone.

I don't understand how anyone has problems with the droid keyboard. What kind of mutant sausage-thumbed people do you hang out with?

I have to admit as a Blackberry user (work phone) I'm looking a bit more closely at the Torch than the other two... mainly because with work I'm locked into the Blackberry platform. It is a moot point for now since the Torch is on AT&T and I'm not giving up my iPhone for another BB device but if the Torch comes to VZW I have no problems ditching my Curve for the Torch.

The Epic is a pretty slick looking device but it's main handicap is that it is on Sprint - in my neck of the woods Sprint has some horrible service and I'm not much on the CS either. The Droid 2 looks way too much like the original Droid which I'm not a fan of at all - IMHO it's kinda fugly...

Nokia's E-Series phones have some solid keyboards which are immensely productive. The phones are Boys compared to the Men above, but still..

You said: "But those same people report that 90% of the time they never use it, since it?s so bad."

It is interesting to me that you phrased that that way. I visit the Droid forums and blogs on a daily basis, and I never hear anyone in the talk-backs complain about the physical keyboard. For those that prefer the on-screen keyboard, however, the reason I always hear is because it "is so good", not that the real keyboard is "so bad".

I got news for ya, the Droid fans are just as rabid as the iPhone fans, and you won't hear them talking trash about it any more than the Apple crowd. I want to meet all these people you say think the physical keyboard sucks, other than you, that is. I admit the original keyboard was a little difficult to use, but because the top row of keys was so close to the body of the phone, but that and key size/spacing is much better on the Droid 2. If these people you say hate the physical keyboard are using the D1, then I will partially agree with you, but if they are using the D2, I won't.

The Blackberry keyboard is impossible for me to use, I have tried. The Samsung keyboard is nice, but Sprint sucks where I live, and the screen isn't as good as the Motorola in my opinion.

I'll stick with my Droid 1 until I blow it up (kinda overclocked) and see what is available then, but I will look at the Motorola phones first.

Why would you overclock your phone? Just curious...
