Rackspace eyes virtual desktop services

By | May 23, 2011, 7:00am PDT

Summary: Rackspace will launch desktop virtualization services via partners such as Citrix.

Rackspace on Monday said it will launch desktop virtualization services via partners such as Citrix.

The news, announced at the Citrix Summit 2011, highlights how virtualized desktops are starting to make their way to enterprises via multiple avenues. Rackspace is planning to offer its virtual desktop platform bundled with its hosting services. The general idea is the virtual desktops will be a nice add-on to other services.

Gartner is expecting that virtual desktops will take off in 2012 to 2014. In some respects, the move is already underway as enterprises are giving access to enterprise desktops and apps via tools like Citrix Receiver.

Rackspace says it’s working with channel partners to deliver virtual desktops, but Citrix looks like it’s is the focus for now. Among the key points:

  • Rackspace’s hosted virtual desktop will use the company’s RackConnect to tether its CloudServers to Citrix XenApp.
  • The Rackspace virtual desktop uses NetApp storage to deploy and clone desktops.
  • Channel partners can add Rackspace’s virtual desktop platform to fill out lineups for customers.
