By | March 8, 2011, 7:00am PST

Summary: Rackspace launched a services unit dubbed Cloud Builders to deploy its OpenStack operating system.

Rackspace on Tuesday launched a services unit dubbed Cloud Builders to deploy its OpenStack operating system.

OpenStack is Rackspace’s effort to be a platform. Cloud Builders is the combination of Rackspace’s support and the services operations of Anso Labs, a services outfit. OpenStack was launched last year in conjunction with NASA. In October, OpenStack got Microsoft Hyper-V support.

With the move, Rackspace will offer training, certification and deployment services. Here are the components:

  • Training: Rackspace will provide training classes and certification testing for those deploying OpenStack.
  • Deployment: Cloud Builders will partner with experts to deploy OpenStack.
  • Support : Rackspace said it will provide ongoing remote support and proactive monitoring.

For now, OpenStack deployments are mostly in the proof of concept stage. Dell and Rackspace are trying to get more customers interested in OpenStack. Dell is including OpenStack installer on select systems.   Current partners include: Autonomic Resources, Canonical, Citrix, Cloudscaling, Cybera, Dell, Equinix, Intel, Grid Dynamics, Microsoft and Opscode.

I hope this doesn't come across as spam, because I'm giving a review from personal experience. If there were any company that I would trust for cloud services (even though I still don't trust the cloud concept) it would be Rackspace. We use them for our hosted web services and they are outstanding! I've never been happier with a hosting company before.

And no, I don't work for them.

Honest opinion.
