Update below: Some mornings stink. I had gone offline for a few hours Saturday to wake up this morning to find that Russell Shaw died. At this point, I'm just stunned.

Dan and I were emailed by Russell's girlfriend Ellen, but details are still sketchy (see Techmeme). He died russ.jpgon March 14 in a hotel room. Like Marc Orchant, Russell, who covered VOIP, broadband and Research in Motion for ZDNet, passed without a hint that something was wrong. He was always quick with a joke and as Matthew Miller noted was an enthusiastic blogger.

To lose two people in the ZDNet family in just a few months is shocking. In fact, Russell, who just turned 60 in November, was on his way to cover the Emerging Technologies Conference and VON. The last note I got from him was this.

In san jose hotel. After three planes, from alabama have come down with something.

Resting now posts to resume later today or tomorrow

It sounded like the same bug we've all had for the last week. And then last night about 6:45 p.m. EDT, I got an email from Russell's girlfriend saying he passed away. He never made it to VON. She's trying to contact people at VON and the other show he was going to attend. His funeral will be held in Florida.

I'll update as we find out more. Rest in peace Russell. I'm just shocked. We've lost another one.

Update: Talked to Ellen. She said that Russell's funeral will be a week from today (March 23) in Florida, but didn't have much more detail than that at the moment. It's also unclear what caused Russell's death, but "he wasn't feeling well at all Thursday night" and "he thought he could sleep it off." We'll pass along more details about the funeral home and other items as we get them.

    Larry,

We're all shocked and stunned. We expected Russ at eComm last week and when he didn't make it over, figured that his plans had changed. Little did we know.

All of the VoIP bloggers are being made aware, at his ladyfriend's request and I think we'll all do something as a group later this week at VON.

Everyone is shocked, stunned and dismayed over this. As a friend of his, and of Marc, we're all just shaking our heads in disbelief.

  • Just terrible

Russell was one of the earliest ZDNet bloggers, and the fellow who proved (eagerly, every day) that he could connect the dots on almost any subject. I remember thinking, "an IP Telephony blog? That's going to be a snoozer for sure." He proved me wrong for years.

My condolences to Ellen and all those close to Russell.

  • Stunned and saddened

After reading Dan's announcement, I was stunned with my mouth agape.

I always made it a point to read Russell's entries and was looking forward to his reports from VON. I found his insight enlightening, his style refreshing, and his willingness to wade through patent applications in search of news remarkable. I think it is safe to say that we were enriched by his presence.

To Ellen and Russell's family, I offer my condolences. I know my feelings about this news is mere fraction of what you are feeling now.

It is indeed say to have heard of his passing. He was a fellow tech journalist I had the pleasure to chat with more than once. He will be missed.

I never met Russell in person, but his passion and personality shone in every post he published and every email he sent. He didn't so much sweat the details of life and work; he reveled in them. My condolences to his family and friends.

  • This is becoming to common place.

Though I did not know Russell personally, these sudden departures should be a wake up call to us all that, above all else, and for the sake of our loved ones, we absolutely MUST give our health a priorty. Through our daily hustles and bustles of life, how we should keep ourselves healthy (mentally, physically and spiritually) always seems to take a back seat. I am not suggesting that Russell did not, I don't know. But I do know many of us that are reading this are not. STOP! Make your life and health a priorty. Show your family that they are important enough to you for you to prioritize your health so you can be around longer to not just enrich yourself, but to enrich them. They need great minds like yours! Get it done today!

I hope you people at ZDNet and CNET are taking good care of yourselves physically. Get yourselves to a doctor if you got bitten by a "bug". It may save your life.

My condolences to the family, friends and co-workers of Russell Shaw.

  • A sad day...

I have had two friends pass away because they came down with what they thought might just be a bug of some sort, and it's always so terrible when this kind of thing happens.

I did not have the chance to meet Russell, but I am sure I would have liked him.

My sincerest of condolences to all who did know him.
