Research in Motion has acquired Gist in the latest effort to build out its software and services portfolio.
Gist is a Web-based tool that's used to manage contacts. It makes your email and calendar more social.
Why is Gist a good fit for RIM? RIM's secret sauce for years has been email. The BlackBerry is almost a synonym for corporate email. However, Apple and a bevy of Android devices are closing the gap. Suddenly, RIM doesn't look as sexy as it used to.
Gist isn't likely to cure all of RIM's problems, but the latest acquisition will certainly make BlackBerry email more sticky. And when you combine Gist with acquisitions like QNX, which gave RIM its next-gen mobile OS, it's clear RIM is building an interesting software portfolio.
