Just two months after making Chatter generally available, Salesforce today is announcing Mobile Chatter, apps for the iPad, iPhone, Blackberry and Android devices.

In this first couple of months, more than 20 percent of the company's customers - 20,000 of the 82,000 customers - have adopted the free Chatter tool, which looks and feels a lot like Facebook - but is intended more for businesses.

Salesforce cites a comscore data that shows that Facebook users are about twice as active on their mobile devices as they are on the web interface. Salesforce sees that same potential among mobile workers.

It makes sense - but companies will need to get past that "social" comparison used to explain what Chatter is. While it may look and feel like Facebook - including the ability to "share" documents, PDFs and other files - the business use for Chatter feels more like a collaboration tool that can substantially reduce the amount of back-and-forth e-mail among those working on a project.

The iPad, iPhone and Blackberry apps will be available in the coming months while the Android app won't release until early next year.
