SanDisk acquires FlashSoft; doubles down on enterprise SSDs

By | February 15, 2012, 6:55am PST

Summary: Storage maker SanDisk will acquire storage software provider FlashSoft in a bid to expand its enterprise SSD offerings.

Silicon Valley storage darling (if such a thing can exist) SanDisk on Wednesday announced that it would acquire FlashSoft, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based flash memory software maker.

FlashSoft gives SanDisk a bigger presence in the enterprise market for solid state disk drive storage. The acquiring company says it plans to sell FlashSoft’s products — which promise to boost performance and scalability of applications running on servers — both as standalone and bundled offerings, in conjunction with SanDisk’s existing SAS, PCi and SATA products.

In essence, FlashSoft’s software configures flash memory products as cache for traditional HDD storage. It supports Windows, Linux and VMWare.

Here’s a short video on how it works:

SanDisk says the acquisition will give it the foundation it needs to continue building up its SSD offerings, with the hope of offering a comprehensive suite of products for enterprise customers who are increasingly feeling the pain of I/O bottlenecks in their datacenters.
