SAP's John Wookey---a high profile hire of three years ago---has left the company.

Wookey, executive vice president in charge of development, led SAP's on demand efforts including the launch of Sales On-Demand. The news, which was tweeted by Keith Costello, general manager of SAP's business analytics unit, comes just a few weeks before the company's Sapphire conference in Orlando.

In November 2008, SAP brought on Wookey, a former Oracle executive, to oversee the company's large enterprise on demand efforts. At the time, the hiring of Wookey was a dramatic statement and a bit of a coup. His role revolved around bringing SAP's core software into a software as a service model.

SAP wasn't immediately available for comment.

Update: What's all this mean for SAP's on-demand strategy? For now, it's a bit unclear. There could be a credibility gap with Wookey's departure, but the split seems amicable. In fact, Dennis Howlett and Phil Wainewright are on tap to talk to Wookey and Peter Lorenz, executive vice president of SAP's On-Demand Solutions unit. We'll have a lot more on the Wookey departure in the days ahead and what it means.
