Now for a liberal arts type like me, this news isn’t going to amount to much. The only thing that makes me run away faster than a spreadsheet is a PowerPoint presentation.

But for the spreadsheet folks in the house, Zoho is pitching performance for its spreadsheet app. Zoho, which offers cloud productivity and enterprise apps ranging from word processors to CRM software, said it has changed the backend processing to handle large spreadsheets. Indeed, Google’s spreadsheet supports 400,000 cells, with a maximum of 256 columns per sheet.

For comparison’s sake, Microsoft Excel supports 1,048,576 rows by 16,384 columns, but it really depends on the memory you have. Overall, it’s a bit tricky to compare spreadsheets due to various caveats.

Zoho Sheet also now supports Chrome and Safari.
