Study: Minorities leading in mobile web usage; helping close digital divide

By | July 8, 2010, 3:55am PDT

Summary: A study that looks at mobile web usage found numbers that suggest that the digital divide among minority groups is being closed because of access on a mobile phone

The key to eliminating the Digital Divide may be the mobile phone.

In an interesting look at the usage of mobile web among Americans, a study by the Pew Internet and American Life project (PDF) found that both African-Americans and English-speaking Hispanics are the leading users of the mobile web connection on a phone.

The numbers are pretty impressive for both minority groups, which have largely gone under-represented in earlier studies about Internet usage. Among Hispanics, just more than half (51 percent) have accessed the Internet from a mobile device. Among African-Americans, 46 percent accessed the Web from their mobile phones, compared to 33 percent of whites and 38 percent of all adults.

The trend remains the same for other activities using a mobile phone, including watching a video, using a social networking site or taking a picture.

Likewise, those same groups access the mobile web more frequently, with 55 percent of English-speaking Hispanics using their phones to go online several times a day.

For years, there were efforts to close the so-called “digital divide,” an ongoing issue that put some minority groups at a disadvantage because they had such small rates of computer ownership or online access. Making feature phones and smartphones more accessible and affordable has changed the makeup of who’s online and minority groups are now outpacing others, including all adults as a collective group, in use of some advanced features.

All of that becomes even more relevant when you consider that efforts to increase advertising through mobile devices is just getting started.

It's what I expected

This is just a first sign of things to come. I fully expect that once smartphones replace the standard phones in emerging markets, all those billions who, for years, were left on the sidelines because they couldn't afford a PC will find themselves making up the majority of persons regularly using the web.

It will be interesting to see the effect that smartphones will have on the rate of future expansion of the consumer PC market, particularly into the emerging markets. After all, if most people begin to find that their phone can perform the tasks that were driving them towards wanting a PC, the PC purchase becomes optional at best and the PC market, when compared to the cellular market, will start to look more like a niche for the minority who need more computing power.

@eMJayy
I love the predictions. Maybe you should check out Quanta's number. They just set a record for laptop shipments in June. I know everyone thinks their phone could possibly replace their desktops and laptops but I know of no person that has ditched their PC's because they have a smartphone. Not 1 yet.

As for the study, you might care about this if you are a marketing expert, but really the internet is open for business to anyone and everyone, so does it really matter what color your skin is while you surf the net. Love it how for a society that is supposed to move past color and race, we seem to have a barrage of more and more studies like this seperating everyone into their skin colors. Lets move above and beyond the pettiness.
@eMJayy and @OhTheHumanity, interesting points.

@OhTheHumanity I don't believe the study necessarily means people will eventually replace PCs with mobile phones. But I see in my experience that a large population that cannot afford a PC and/or internet access are turning to mobile devices as a viable option.

Yes, the internet is open for business, but that business costs money and requires access. And unfortunately, the communities that have less of both in many cases are minority. We don't have to like it. But ignoring it will not make it go away, either.
@OhTheHumanity
But let me ask, what am I supposed to do about it? My experience has been do well in school, get educated, care about your life, and in America you can succeed. Thats how you get on the internet. Sorry many mommys and daddys don't give a damn about their children, but what can I do about it?

PCs are pretty cheap now, almost as cheap as a mobile phone with a big plan attached to it like a smart phone. A smartphone can't really be your place to write a resume or do good job seeking or research. Also not to mention all the apps that just aren't great for a smartphone. People just need to be smarter with their money and actually give a damn about their life and then they will have a pc, smartphone, and whatever else they desire.

But hey why work hard, I mean we always have uncle sam to give'm something. And I will have to give another shout out to the damn Unions in this country that sent work overseas way before it needed to. But I know its all the rich greedy white men that are holding everyone down.
I do not really see access to more advertising as progress on closing the digital divide.

The digital divide is about knowledge and skill, not about possessions. It is marginally about access. But to what end? Access to more advertising?

African-Americans and Hispanics will only close the digital divide when they use technology to increase their own knowledge and skills, and not to enrich the pockets of the marketing domain.
I believe all the comments are correct. As a REALTOR(R), I have sold to people from all over the world and to every nationality living here in America. One of my best friends is Africian American, we go to lunch, dinner, shopping, movies, and I am proud to be shown with her, she is such a delight, and no one could be more white than a pale-faced redhead.

If they can't afford a computer?
windozefreak 8th Jul 2010
Then, how do they afford the high cost of telephone calls, and the high cost of telephone equipment? I think too much crowing about nothing!
@windozefreak
Guys, why are we still talking and researching on people's skin color?
Shame on us..
With all the sociorelational and class orientation considerations aside I'd at least like to make an observation. That it is almost an actual pleasurable experience to have the digital experience available and less than a hanky toss away at any time. Much can be made of too much attention to material possesions, without critique. But the ability to be contacted and/or informed at a second notice is almost profound.
