TeraGrid picks up $150 million
The TeraGrid, a set of distributed compute resources established for scientific research, has received $150 million award, to be doled out over five years, from The National Science Foundation. Built over the past 4 years, the TeraGrid "TeraGrid is built to tackle complex, compute-intensive scientific problems, such as decoding genomes, weather forecasting, seismic modeling, oil reserves exploration, identifying brain disorders, simulating cardiovascular processes, understanding dark energy, and the origins of the universe. I can imagine a time in the more distant future, when I can plug into the TeraGrid and try out some new recipes...
Gyroid structure simulated on the TeraGrid
The image displays a wishbone view of a gyroid structure, which divides space into two interpenetrating regions or labyrinths. The gyroid structure simulation used 6,000 processors, at six different facilities on two continents, outputting 17 teraflops of compute power. The structure has over a billion grid points.
