The Google-China showdown: Who won? Who caved?

The Google-China showdown: Who won? Who caved?

Summary: The Chinese government grants a license renewal that allows Google to maintain its presence in China but that doesn't necessarily mean that Google is a "winner" here.

SHARE:
Google today said that the Chinese government renewed its Internet Content Provider license so that Google.cn - even with a link redirecting users to the uncensored Google.hk site - can remain live. A victory? Sure, but for whom? As Christopher Dawson points out, it seems to be a victory for everyone involved - Google, the Chinese government and even Wall Street, which is rallying around Google shares this morning. But, Dana Blankenhorn disagrees and argues that Google actually lost in this showdown. His take:
The Google.cn home page now offers only a link to its “uncensored” Hong Kong site, but those searches are easily traced and China’s firewall can then censor the results. Services other than search are still run out of China. No Google user searching in the Chinese language can thus access information about anything the government decides, on its whim, the people should not know about. That was the government’s position all along. That position has been upheld.
Adding to that, Blankenhorn says Google never really had a chance because it got "no support" from the U.S. government in its efforts to fight against censorship. And so, that brings us to today. Google - which has been vocal in its blog posts about the conflict in the past - simply released a one-sentence update to an earlier post to announce the "victory" in China. That doesn't feel like the bells and whistles that should be released when you score a victory over a major government like China's. Maybe that's because it's not a real victory. Google simply gets to saves face by maintaining a "presence" in China while the government is happy because it still has the power to censor. But, hey, shares of Google are on the upswing this morning. And, for a public company that's gone out on a limb to make a bold statement, is that really what's most important when determining a win or a loss? • yeap... it is all about saving face...

both sides can do whatever their want now. China can still cencor, West can still pretend that they can give uncensored search results. Democratic values vs Money match... And... guess who wins,,, Big surprise...

  • A public company whose stock has been plummeting can hardly be a winner

Yes, Google stock is up, but by only 2.x% today. Just usual day-to-day fluctuation, especially considering that ever since this China war started early this year, Google stock is now down 20%! Compare to this: it's just been reported that Apple is going to open 25 Apple stores in China in the next 2 years. Both Apple and Baidu stocks have been up more than 20% this year.

This is a very good post. Those who see the big picture know that Google is a big loser in all of this.

Also, its no coincidence that Apple is entering China right now. The iPhone is going to be huge there. Google could of had a giant market for Android if they weren't so smug in the beginning.

  • Google Stocks are still near double that of Apple! haha :D

iPhone was down again for the last 3month period, compared to Android UP UP UP UP 4% as the only phone OS to make gains! ahaha ;)

Apple iTunes account theft fiasco is going to reap havoc on them. Apple is only claiming one Vietnamese developer farm and closed that down. Meanwhile Chinese, Eastern and Africa are cleaning up on your.... iTunes accounts! :D

It's not mainstream, but you will see some lawsuits out of this. Apple has simply put it all on ignore (like they always do) to make it all go away! .....but they're Apps buying Apps and Farms upon Farms in a concerted effort to undermine and take advantage of weak security of iTunes!

I go to these other blogs and news sites and they are reporting on it. Where's ZDNet? ..... doing like Apple.... ignoring it till it's too late!!!!

Apple=soft assets that can disappear just as fast as they went up, and you idiots are all cruising for a bruising like Apple! :D

As far as Google goes??? .... pull your heads out of your rear so you can hear. Google Stock doesn't have to go to stay ahead of Apple! haha.... and for anybody that owns Goog stock is this will be a banner year and next year will be even better!

So go ahead and gloat on your Lemon phone. You'll you'll need your MaxiPad to soak up your tears by years end! :D

@i2fun@... What in the World is Wrong with this site? You should just take the edit feature out. It works once in a blue moon..... if your lucky!

    • Android fanboys are really bad with math.

Explains why idiots would think 8MP of tiny little pixels could come close to matching 5MP of larger pixels.

Thanks for the incoherent post. It was a great laugh. Between all the fake bank apps in the Android Market Place to the hundreds upon hundreds of "ring tone" apps (that place is a train wreck), the AppStore is looking SWEET.
