Tiered mobile data plans accelerate: Verizon Wireless to follow AT&T's lead

Summary: Verizon Wireless is following AT&T's lead and cooking up tiered data plans. The all you can eat mobile data buffet is history.

Verizon Wireless is following AT&T's lead and cooking up tiered data plans. So long, unlimited mobile data.

Details are sparse about Verizon Wireless' planning, but Bloomberg reports that the telecom carrier will go tiered. Bloomberg quotes Verizon CFO John Killian as saying: "We will probably need to change the design of our pricing where it will not be totally unlimited, flat rate."

It's unclear whether Verizon Wireless will directly match AT&T's pricing model, which includes 2GB of data for $25 a month and $10 a month beyond for each $1GB over the cap. AT&T also has a lower $15 plan for 200MB of data usage a month.

Also: AT&T: Is it alone on data cap island?

AT&T's plan raised a bit of a ruckus, but a larger question was whether Verizon would follow. If Verizon Wireless stayed in the unlimited data camp it could tax its network, but also put AT&T in a competitive bind. Now that the two big wireless dogs are going to metered access other carriers will follow. They'd be stupid not to follow suit---unless you have plenty of capacity and need more customers (Clearwire).

We discussed the industry implications of following AT&T's data cap plan last week. In a nutshell, the industry is better off with tiered plans. Consumer behavior is likely to change. A few key points:

  • Apps will be judged based on efficiency and data usage;
  • Consumers are going to shun mobile video and streaming music services;
  • High-end data hog smarpthones may look less appealing.

That final point is the real item to watch. While the tech savvy may pay up for data, the average user is either going to stay well below the cap and shun broadband-ish services or just get a dumber phone. My guess is folks will still get the fancy phones, but change behaviors. As Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett recently said consumers mobile video habits will change "Customers will pause before clicking on that link you just sent of the squirrel on water skis," he said.

  • They push the rates up high enough...

and people will start canceling their data plans altogether.

Most rates will likely stay the same or go down ... the only ones this will affect are the 2% consuming the crap out of mobile bandwith. Once they are paying, everyone else wins.

The same thing goes to those who have been bitching about tethering for the last few years, like the carriers are just going to give their bandwith away? Seriously!

I pay for tethering and have no problem with paying for it. If they put reasonable caps on it like the current 5gigs then I wont complain. I don't know about others, but I think its pretty easy to go through 2gigs and 200MB's is a joke. I do see the need to stop users from downloading 100's of gigs worth of pirated movies.

    • To the contrary

Why should I pay anywhere near the same rate just for checking my e-mail and the weather as some teenager who's streaming movies 18 hours a day? For the majority of users, this might actually mean lower rates over the long run.

You aren't paying for some teenager to stream movies 18 hours a day. They are capped at 5GB just like you. I am a heavy user and never go over about 1.8GB per month. However, previously, my email volume was much higher. So, I routinely hit 3 - 4GB and had tethering - so I was paying $60 a month.

Bandwidth is about to increase for VZW, I think their strategy is to keep 3G where it is and try to upsel to 4G. That's their stated policy for the conversion from 3G to 4G.

What is the point of building a super fast 4G network and then try to force customers away from using multimedia features. If I'm only using simple apps like gps, yellow pages, etc. then I'm totally happy with 3G. I have a htc incredible now, I wonder if this is going to drive me away from smartphones in 2 years.

I think if you have a contract they cant change it on you. you will have to decide when you are up for a new contract. I have about 23 months to worry about it.

Go to Sprint, unlimited everything $70. AT&T is horrible with the 3G service so forget about 4G and Verizon is just going to piggyback the AT&T pricing. Oh yeah, sprint even has navigation software so you don't need a Garmin! Go Sprint!

  • A bit more depth to the story...

If you'd actually like to get a bit more information than some blind fortune telling based on the CFO's quote (which incidentally was pertaining to 4G access once it is rolled out), I found the following article to provide more details and better analysis: http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/199269/verizon_hints_at_following_atandt_to_end_unlimited_data_plans.html?tk=hp_new

Looks like they are trying give Sprint it's customers back.

  • Screw them both

AT&T and Verizon are both crooks. Sprint, on the other hand, has an ALL-INCLUSIVE plan (unlimited calling to mobile phones, 450 to landlines, unlimited data, unlimited text) for $60/month, or $70/month with some of the newer smartphones like the EVO.

I don't see how AT&T and Verizon can even begin to compete with that. To put it in comparison when I had AT&T for my iPhone, I was paying close to $115 a month for 450 anytime minutes, 250 texts and unlimited data. If I tried to get the equivalent plan with them, I'd be looking at about $150/month even before this tiered data nonsense.

As soon as I have the funds, Sprint is where I'll be going to. You can't beat a deal like that.

Sprint is great if you can get the HTC evo and 4G in your area, but there nationwide network is pretty week.

Verizon is a good sport. Nothing like spotting the loosing team a handful of points at half time!

  • This has nothing to do with current bandwidth constraints . . .

But more about preserving there future cash cows when the faster LTE starts coming down the pipe. 2 GB allowances are going to be eaten up very quickly on LTE and all this does is slow down innovation. The wireless carriers obviously don't give a squat about video or voice over ip unless it is coming from them. That is the real reason for the caps. It amazes me all these idiots who praise these consumer screwing moves by the wireless industry. They care about one thing . . . profits. Innovation and competition are just things that gets in the way for them.

I'm interested in knowing whether VZW will improve their data costs for what they've dubbed "multimedia phones". AT&T's $15 for 250MB is far more attractive than the mandatory $10 for a mere 25MB on nearly all decent (excluding rugged) phones.

  • One thing for sure I can think of...

More people may start looking at the unlimited no contract providers out there as Boost mobile or My Simple Mobile(for GSM phones). Heck at this rate, Metro PCS will probably start looking better also... lol

  • First At&T, now verizon, sounds like no competition...

As time goes on, competition is supposed to force MORE service and LESS prices... this is the exact opposite. IF they had created another lower tier and kept the unlimited plan (even with a bit more cost) I would understand, but this limiting of data will truly hamper innovation. I think the FCC should investigate why both companies suddenly came up with the same idea.

  • I forsee alot of apps being removed from peoples phones and the app....

stores loosing a ton of money. I believe that the apps that people will download will have to be the full version instead of connection to the internet to run. The other thing I foresee is the smart phones leaving with companies that created them suing the network companies to get the money they lost from their bad business practices.
