Seriously, what's the point? Windows 7 defaults to turning off the display after some period of time, and which is better for your energy bill, turning off the display or leaving it on but having a screen saver?

His argument of the display staying on for "Several minutes" is nothing more than lame justification to endorse his "cool registry hack".

I agree. Firstly, since NO ONE is still using Cathode Ray Tube monitors with phosphors that can burn, screen savers are not of much use these days. And second, why trade the logon screen for a logon screen saver... doesn't make much sense unless you just like to see something moving on your screen until the power setting turns it off. Sheesh!

LCD screens can still get something similar to CRT "burn in". It is called "Image Persistance". So a screen saver is still useful. It is better to have the monitor turn off for powersaving reasons, but keep in mind that everytime you turn on and off ANY monitor you are subjecting it to expansion stress and possibly decreasing its life expectancy (depending on a rooms environmental factors).

And I STILL USE MY CRT 19" Swiss made monitor which has better colour than any LCD I've ever seen. And it uses less power than most of those so called energy saving LCD screens. :-P And the colour doesn't change by the direction I look at it. Much better for graphic design.

I will keep it till it dies :-D
(I've repaired it twice myself for the above mensioned expansion reasons and the colour is still beautiful)

Actually, there is at least one valid reason for using this approach. We have digital displays running a display application as a screensaver. This allows the digital display to run even without a local user logged on. By enabling the Windows 7 logon screensaver, the application runs without logon and will recover when the machine is rebooted.
