Verizon said Wednesday that it has completed a field trial of a fiber-optic system that can provide 10 gigabits per second to the home via FiOS.
That’s a quite bit faster than what you have at home right now. Verizon’s speeds on FiOS today range from 15 Mbps to 50 Mbps, but the company can up the speeds.
In fact, that’s what the Verizon trials with FiOS are really about—showing that the network is future proof (statement). Needless to say, these speeds aren’t available to consumers today.
Using a Motorola system, Verizon conducted a field trail in Taunton, Mass. At the customer’s home, an optical network terminal received a feed providing 10 Gbps downstream and 2.5 Gbps upstream. Tests simulated what a customer may see sending files over the internet, downloading applications and uploading data.
Verizon said its testing server in Reston, Va., saw speeds of up to 915 Mbps between the PC and test system. Verizon said the capacity can support 3DTV, ultra HD TV as well as streaming content and concurrent apps.
