Verizon Wireless 4G network experiencing major outage

By | December 7, 2011, 4:04pm PST

Summary: Verizon’s 4G LTE network isn’t working for many customers nationwide. Are you one of them?

It’s just not Verizon’s day, is it? First, Verizon Communications gets hit with a lawsuit over a debatable advertising campaign. Now Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network is experiencing a major outage throughout the country.

The good news is that it’s not affecting everyone. Several of ZDNet’s writers throughout the country have replied that everything appears fine with their Verizon-powered mobile devices.

However, that’s not the case for everyone. Readers have written in explaining their experiences with the data outage, complaining of down times since yesterday afternoon.

ZDNet’s Stephen Chapman, based in Charlotte, N.C., explained that his HTC Thunderbolt had been stuck on 3G for a few hours today, so he disabled and re-enabled the mobile settings. Unfortunately after that, he had neither 3G nor 4G access.

Additionally, Verizon’s discussion boards are flooded with complaints — most of which describe how frustrated customers are with the lack of answers and support on Verizon’s part rather than the actual outage.

Verizon has responded publicly — albeit briefly via Twitter:

We’re working to resolve some 4GLTE issues ASAP, some customers report operating on 3G or no data. 3G data; calls/texts unaffected

If you are a Verizon 4G LTE subscriber, have experienced any problems with your connectivity in the last 24 hours?

Nyc here. Using a rezound. No data from the afternoon through the night. Even when manually switching the radio from LTE to CDMA.
To temporary get 3g on your 4g phone until this is fixed, goto Network Mode option to CDMA/EvDo auto (rather than CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto.)
This evening, Verizon is yoyoing in and out between 4G and 3G in my part of Virginia.
Seems fine in Redmond, WA.
4G is back. I had no data connection after about 3:30 this afternoon. Sometime between 6 and 7 p.m., there was data via 3G. About an hour ago, 4G resumed. This is the first problem I've experienced with 4G. I am confident that Verizon moved heaven and earth to solve its issues.
I had 3g for most of the day, I tried to reset and ended up with no data. Got it back around 8PM CT (in Chicago)
My 4g stopped working from the evening of Dec 6. I had very patchy 3G coverage on Dec 7. Now I see some consistency on 3G today (early hours of Dec 8). Dreading to switch to 4G for fear of losing that patchy 3G!
Finally decided to toggle. Now 4G seems to be working!
