Verizon Wireless faults technical issue for 4G outage

Summary: Verizon Wireless speaks out as to why its 4G LTE network suffered a major outage across the country this week.

Verizon Wireless‘ 4G LTE network, touted as the “fastest, most advanced network in action,” suffered a major outage on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Although the downtime does not seem to have affected all 4G subscribers, many customers across vast swaths of the country experienced difficulties getting 4G — and sometimes 3G — access on their mobile devices.

Verizon has since addressed the problem publicly in more detail. Reuters reports that Verizon is attributing the LTE outage to a “technical issue.” However, Verizon reps were not any more specific than that, but the problem is supposedly “resolved” now.

Many readers described their experiences with the data outage, complaining of down times since Tuesday afternoon.

Verizon’s discussion boards were also flooded with complaints — most of which describe how frustrated customers are with the lack of answers and support on Verizon’s part rather than the actual outage.

Verizon did responded publicly after news of the outage spread — albeit briefly via Twitter:

We’re working to resolve some 4GLTE issues ASAP, some customers report operating on 3G or no data. 3G data; calls/texts unaffected

The outage began hours after I received my Droid RAZR and I was on the verge of returning my phone that same day! The solution: a simple text from Verizon to 4G customers would've saved lots of wasted time and eased frustrations.

It's not resolved everywhere yet. I'm still showing 3G with up/down speeds of about 0.9Mbps in the Baltimore/DC metro area :'(
Verizon is attributing the LTE outage to a ???technical issue.??? Duh. Why even bother to release a statement that general.
I am on my second Bionic. I exchanged the first because I had daily drops. The new phone came with version .886 of the software and it seemed to be much better. However, I still have to restart my phone, pull the battery or toggle airplane mode nearly every morning to get the signal back.
At first I thought it was my dock causing the problem, but leaving it off the dock did not keep the loss of signal from happening. After the exchange, I noted that the signal usually drops at night most often but also drops when I travel from work to home (I work in a 4G area and live in a 3G area). I think that there is something in the technology that does not handle the hand-off between 3G to 4G very well. It does get frustrating to have to reset the phone to get the signal back. I think the phone is fine, but the problem is Verizon's.
Oh yes, the outage was very real. And yes, who would have thought that a simple automated texting service could have saved tons of money, resources, and peoples nerves. I have a 4G MiFi and a Samsung Charge (4G capable) and when they both agree, ain't no 4G, there is also usually a problem with 3G as well. I have been noticing it happening about once a month since I got mine in April.

I also got my Mifi just the same day as the big outage at the end of April so I understand the frustration llopez01! VerizonW is on a communications collision course! I hope they get it straight soon. Verizon's 4G is quite nice, not sure the other carriers quite have it yet. Although it is a tease to pass through an area where 4G download speeds are approx 50MB down then 3MB. But, still better than the old Ham radios we used to use, huh?
