Verizon Wireless on Thursday announced a device that may come in handy on the road: A USB wireless broadband that couples Evolution-Data Optimized (EDVO) access with 4GB of integrated storage.

The general idea is to meld the storage and transport of documents, photos and video. The wireless modem, USB727, is available Oct. 5.

The modem, developed by Novatel Wireless, is designed to work with most desktops and notebooks. The modem will cost you $149.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate along with a new two-year agreement for data access.

The announcement caught my eye given that I'm looking forward to trading in my Motorola Q. Instead of getting another smartphone I'm weighing splitting my all you can eat plan for a wireless broadband service and a pay as you go phone. I use the data plan constantly, but rarely bother with the phone.
