Verizon Wireless will be expanding its 4G mobile broadband network across more than 20 markets nationwide, including several new entire markets, on Thursday, September 15th.

Newbies to Verizon's 4G LTE network include several counties across Ohio, Illinois, California, Iowa and Texas, among other states. Expansion of coverage in existing markets will take place in Campbelltown, Pa., Cleveland, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Mario Turco, president of Verizon Wireless’ Philadelphia Tri-State Region, asserted in a statement that Verizon's "3G high-speed Mobile Broadband network is the largest and most reliable in the United States, and we are the first wireless company on the globe to launch a sizeable LTE 4G footprint, covering more than 160 million people."

Verizon is promising to expand its 4G network to cover more than 185 million Americans by the end of 2011. The wireless provider also boasts that its 4G network is up to 10 times faster than the company’s 3G network, and that "Verizon 4G LTE smartphones are twice as fast as any AT&T smartphone," which is not hard to accomplish considering AT&T's 4G network is still rather limited.

The 4G race is heating up -- albeit more slowly than many investors and consumers would like. However, Deloitte reported on Monday that U.S. wireless telecommunications companies are expected to invest $25 billion to $53 billion in the advancement of 4G between 2012 and 2016, which could result in 771,000 additional jobs and $151 billion in GDP growth.
