Video: Second Life competing with Cisco Telepresence?

By | September 2, 2008, 10:24am PDT

Joe Miller, VP of platforms and technology development at Linden Lab, explains how Second Life has become a competitor to Cisco’s Telepresence in conducting international meetings, group projects, and even recruiting and job training.

I don’t quite buy Miller’s take, but it’s worth a quick a few minutes to ponder. After all, you could save a little on your travel budget.

One of the things that is beoming a key issue is that gaming (simulation systems) are being used in many other areas than entertainment and its about to become a real problem since none of them have the privacy or disclosure legal hurdles dealt with.

The Gamers generally ignore this by responding "eh we dont need no stinking hurdles" but the reality is that for commercial users to put those tools in place without putting in place the policies and procedures to insure that confidential or "PII" is not disclosed inside the gaming or simulation platform, could cost them in ways thay cannot possibly imagine yet.

Larry (and Dan): nice video and nice blog...I, too, think to compare Cisco TelePresence with Second Life is a bit of a stretch. Other thoughts here: http://blogs.cisco.com/news/comments/vote_cisco_telepresence_or_second_life/

Larry: Telepresence and other digital collaboration technologies can create oceans of records , which could be relevant for lawsuits, investigations and internal control. As the technologies grow more popular, enterprises must evaluate how to address these massive records under retention policies. --Ben http://hack-igations.blogspot.com/2008/02/collaboration-e-discovery-and-record.html
