VMware belatedly gets into the iPad game

By | March 9, 2011, 5:00am PST

VMware on Wednesday launched its VMware View software for Apple’s iPad as it plays catch-up to tablet virtualization movers Citrix and Wyse.

The software, available on Apple’s App Store, gives iPad users access to Windows desktops, applications and data via virtualization.

With the move, VMware gets into the iPad virtualization client game. Citrix was an early mover with its Receiver app and has an Apple’s iOS hit. Citrix’s Receiver is also on other platforms and will cover most tablets hitting the market ranging from Android devices to BlackBerry’s upcoming Playbook. Wyse also has its PocketCloud app for the iPad, iPhone and Android platforms so users can access their desktops.

Ironically, both Wyse supported VMware View on the iPad before VMware did. Simply put, VMware is playing from behind in the tablet game, but with a large installed base VMware View for the iPad should see a lot of downloads.

VMware View for the iPad includes the following features:

  • Access to Windows virtual desktops via PC-over-IP display protocol.
  • Multitouch support and on-screen track pad so users can use a traditional mouse set-up.
  • Instant-on Windows desktops.
  • Support for iPad Keyboard Dock and Bluetooth keyboards.

Good day to confirm this comment I would appreciate T h e b e s t o f Z D N e t d e l i v e r e d your website very nice to everyone Yes, Oracle is the only one with shared-disk architecture, but that is there advantage. It means you can add or remove nodes and the database lives on. In a shared nothing architecture, if you lose a node, you lose the system. I'm sure Oracle appreciates EMC highlighting their advantage.I also desire to signal in your RSS feeds. Thank you as soon as once again and maintain up the great operate Awesome post! Thank you very much || thanks for nice content this is really benefit to me.

Access/read/write to the host OS (i.e., can you access your music, videos and files?). I ask about the write part because removing HAVING to use iTunes and the associated pure garbage Quicktime from the equation would be sweet and might actually make the iPad a possibility for me.

Oh, that leads to another question, is it limited to only Windows as the guest OS?

iPads are just a fad.. happy

So VMware took a little longer to port a viewer over to the pad platform. The new tech toy smell is not even off of the iPad and the other offerings of this nature. The whole second round of 'tablet computing' (woah, throw back term alert) needs a little time to settle in before we start worrying that they don't do everything right away that desktops and laptops do.
