Mossberg.jpgI caught up with Walt Mossberg for a podcast prior to the Churchill Club event "Making a List: What's Hot and What's Not in Personal Technology," which Walt hosted with fellow Wall Street Journal columnist Kara Swisher.

Walt explains why the "device formerly known as the cell phone" is the hottest consumer product category, along with iPods and other products that are in the emerging class of small, human-scaled computers with growing sets of capabilities. Walt also gives his viewpoint on how Apple's Steve Jobs manages to keep the hits coming, the "Napsterization of television" and the rationale behind digital rights management.

You can also watch a video of Walt showing me his latest favorite gear, including a tiny video player from Iriver, a hard disk-based camcorder, a phone with a 2-megapixel camera and optical zoom, the very cool Motorola Q handheld and a cordless VoIP phone.

I also got the scoop from Kara on some of her favorite gadgets, including a high-tech coffeemaker, an all-in-one rechargeable power source, antimicrobial toothbrushes and my favorite, a washable keyboard. Click here to watch the video.

The podcast can be delivered directly to your desktop or MP3 player if you're subscribed to our podcasts (See ZDNet’s podcasts: How to tune in), or you can just download the MP3

  • More up-to-date subscription info...

The "how to subscribe" info above is a bit out of date. By far the
easiest way, if you have iTunes installed, is to just click the
    Podcast subscription link:

    http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/
    viewPodcast?id=80590009

That will take you to the info page for ZDNet Podcasts. You then
have the option to click the Subscribe button.

  • Size

All the Smartphone folks (vendors and carriers) are doing is making the Cell phone more like a PDA by increasing its Screen Size and adding better CPU and WiFi Access. It is really a PDA with a Cell phone feature.
These Cell Carriers are so afraid of what the WiFi/WiMAX world is going to do to their Metro area markets and how they are going to be relegated to providing Narrowband data/video services in rural far suburb markets.
The need to some how delay the deployment of these WiFi enabled Wireless Mesh systems until they can get ahold of this break away market.
