What scared Microsoft into scrapping a secret tablet project?

By | April 29, 2010, 1:57pm PDT

Summary: Microsoft has reportedly pulled the plug on the Courier tablet that had been in the works, but gave no reasons.

Microsoft has reportedly pulled the plug on Courier, the folding tablet/booklet device that was reportedly in “late prototype” last fall but was never launched - or acknowledged, for that matter, according to Gizmodo. Citing “sources familiar with the matter,” the site reported that CEO Steve Ballmer informed the internal team that the project would no longer be supported.

Obviously, Microsoft isn’t giving up any details about why it pulled the plug. But Gizmodo did post a statement from the company. In a nutshell, Microsoft is always exploring and testing new products and technologies and the Courier project was one of those. While it will be “evaluated in for use in future offerings” there are no plans to build such a device right now, the company said. Gizmodo first reported on the “Secret Tablet” in September (see image).

That’s probably a good call for Microsoft, given the arrival of the iPad and the buzz around others in the works, including the HP Slate. Apple’s must-have device has put a high bar in place for tablet computing and anything below that bar was destined to be the butt of jokes. C’mon, was Microsoft really going to launch something cooler and hipper than the iPad?

It also gives Microsoft some time to sit back and watch to see how consumers and verticals - like education and health care - do and don’t like in their tablet offerings. It’s times like this when it’s important to remember that the iPod wasn’t the first mp3 player to hit the market.

I hope Microsoft is instead putting all of its “mobile” resources into the launch of Windows Phone 7. The smartphone war is in full swing, especially now that HP is ready to start putting its strength behind Palm. Apple has a huge head start with the iPhone, Google is on Apple’s tail with a lineup of Android devices and carrier partners, RIM is gearing up for a new Blackberry OS of its own and don’t forget Symbian, which is also gearing up for a later-this-year smartphone OS update.

If Microsoft wants to be a contender, it needs to hone in on getting that mobile OS released - pronto!

but would render very well on a tablet?

That and cost. Now that we see what the pricing of iPad and other soon to be released devices, the Courier was likelly much more to make.

If the standard iPad sold for 899, then maybe a courier type device for 699 could have sold, but not if it would cost more then the iPad at it's lowest model.

Android and OS X running on ARM processors are eating Microsoft's lunch. All of Microsoft's successes date from 20 years ago and even those are under heavy attack.

Microsoft has nothing new to show for their recent efforts. Pretty depressing, really.

windows7 (or xp for that matter) are not 20 years ago. XBox and its derivatives? Xbox live and the various less popular but still generally well-received keyboards and mice?

I'll agree that their successes are overwhelmingly reactive these days, but don't sell them short.

I still think they should have put this out...even if it was a macbook air kind of thing...more proof of concept to show that they are willing to be creative.

Microsoft was a technical failure
gjafg 29th Apr 2010
Windows 7 tablets are a failure. Bad interface. Poor battery life. Instead, the world is moving towards "slates" running on the ARM processor, such as iPad and a coming army of Android slates.
Windows Phone 7 has lost the game before it even begun. It is not here or anywhere to be seen, and when it comes, it will lack too many features and be uncompetitive. You can see that HP lost faith in WP7, hence the move to webOS, giving them multitasking (which WP7 lacks), and a business market (which WP7 will not have).

You're ridiculous.
evilkillerwhale@... 30th Apr 2010
Windows Mobile has ALWAYS had the most
features. Everything the iPhone does, WinMo 6
did. Apple just had a better interface.

WP7 DOES have multitasking, third parties are
just locked from parts of it. This saves
battery life, allows for a faster user
experience, and makes SENSE FOR A PHONE. It's
what the iPhone's done for years.

Windows Mobile 6 sold fine. Windows 7 has
already captured 1/10 of computer users. People
trust the new MS OS systems again. People will
buy it.

Yep, and people have bashed them for not having true multitasking for
years too. To the point where they're adding it in the next version of
the OS.

"Windows Mobile 6 sold fine."

In what sense does ceding the entire smart phone market and ending
up in last place by the end of the product iteration consitute "just fine"?

"Windows 7 has already captured 1/10 of computer users. People trust

Absolutely agree. Windows won the battle of the desktop 20 years ago
and that's not changing anytime soon, no matter what Linux and Mac
fanboys would like to believe. It's called critical mass. The Steve
realized that years ago (although he would never admit it) - which is
why he shifted Apple's focus to mobile computing and entertainment.

Or are we forever to be chained to our desktops and laptops?

Nope, as time goes on I believe the old, traditional desktop computing model will take a further back seat to mobile computing & entertainment. I wouldn't be surprised if that's happening on a large scale already.
Scared? Why would Microsoft be "scared" to release this device? I'm as sad as you are about them not releasing it as it would have blown all the competition away, but I hardly think they were scared. Most likely when they looked at it from a business standpoint they may not have been able to manufacture it at an affordable cost. Now we have to wait and hope they take this technology and build a "Courier 2.0" instead. Rethink the design even though this one is already ground breaking.

"it would have blown all the competition away,"

Really? Most people would consider that a reason to continue, not pull
the plug. Walking away from a winner is not a way you become, or
stay, a multi-billion dollar company.

"Now we have to wait and hope they take this technology and build a
"Courier 2.0" instead."

That should only be a few forevers. With Apple and the Android
hordes far from pausing in the advancement of their platforms, it
hardly seems likely that Courier 2.0 will be pursued, let alone ever see
the light of day.

Just saying this device
Loverock Davidson 29th Apr 2010
was prematurely terminated. I hope Microsoft has a good reason, because yes it would have beat the heck out of any android device (linux based devices do not do well in the market) and would have really given Apple some stiff competition. The only possible reason it was canceled was due to the cost. Everything else about it sounded superior in every way.

Ah, and they also don't like being humiliated in the market, I suppose that played a huge part too since they saw no chance of reversing the current trend.

inflict damage on google at all cost even if that Bing thing was hugely expensive.

Microsoft has no hopes of the Courier ever becoming mildly successful. The courier will never be able to inflict any damage on Apple or Google, only Microsoft would suffer from it. So they terminated it.

seriously though, everything is a WAG at this point, but my guess is that win7 phone couldn't support this bad boy and win7 (the real deal) was just impractical. Who knows? HP should get on this, now that they have a real OS. I'd consider one, if they could get the battery life up near 5 hours with decent use.

2 screens sucking down the juice makes that kind of a far fetched plan. Check the battery usage on your phone some time and see how much went to the LCD.

Sometimes you gotta wonder what Microsoft is thinking. The
Courier looked pretty cool, and it seemed to be an
interesting product that bridged that gap between PDA and
tablet computer. A market segment that no one else
appeared to be moving into. As such MS could have had that
space to themselves, so the fact they're giving up is very
curious. Some might say it's just one more example of MS
missing out on the future to keep fighting battles they've
already lost. Odd.

I was curious to see how it would pan out in reality.
It is hard to see how MS, with more resources than almost any other IT company, couldn't get this to market.
My guess, is they kept doing UML diagrams with Use Case
after Use Case and forgot to actually do anything even
remotely involved with software engineering but did get a
good Unlimited Money Loss project going.

They did make a few cool videos showing a product that very
inconsistent with dozens of over-lapping gestures.
"C?mon, was Microsoft really going to launch something cooler and hipper than the iPad?"

The iPad is a lame joke. If you think the iPad is cool or hip you are seriously out of touch. Women laugh at the mere mention of the product. You look like a wannabe hipster carrying around an oversized iPhone. Not to mention you look like an idiot for buying a V1 product.

I had no interest in the Courier, but at least it looked like a productivity tool that students and people with actual jobs could have made use of. Maybe the primary reason for creating a product doesn't always have to be whether you think it will make other people view you as hip or cool. If you are reliant on tech gadgets to make you feel hip or cool then you are a loser.

I'm assuming the "8" means you're in eighth grade, right? Guess those
"women" you know haven't got the word that everyone above elementary
school level stopped snickering about the name quite some time ago.

I do agree with you that using a tech toy to try to make you cool is pretty
lame. I happen to know some people in their 40's who haven't gotten over
that yet. And as far as being productive, I believe that if you stay tuned,
you will see some iPad apps developed that fill that bill nicely. There are
other ways to be productive besides using Windows.

You want to be productive? You shouldn't have
bought an Apple. They had productivity in the
bag more than 20 years ago, and decided it was
stupid. They lost everything. Now they are
clawing for market (like they've done since
then) and maintaining a failing business model
for their computer systems. There's a reason
Apple's no longer Apple computers: their
computers suck.

People laughing at people because of what they are using is even lamer
than people USING tech to be cool.

That said, I highly doubt your story. Unless by "people" you mean "you."

What planet are YOU living on?!? Apple has gained market share points

It never existed, it was NOT a prototype, it was not even slated to be a

posted in, since it was first "leaked," the Courier was nothing but a CGI
animation, NOT a product, and MS never had any intention of producing it.

Microsoft has the software, has always been about software

They should leave the hardware up to those who have always done hardware

One idea would be to set up an "iPad Killer Challenge" collaboration site

Microsoft should provide the SDK, and the development support and a 6 or 7 figure award for the best iPad killer

Now that would make Microsoft cool again
