Bank of America has joined a recent string of businesses that have lost consumer information. Backup tapes with records detailing the financial information of as many as 1.2 million government employees were lost in shipment to a backup center, the bank said Friday. Also last week, payroll processor PayMaxx acknowledged that a flaw had left some of its customers' W-2 forms accessible to the Internet. A few days earlier, data collection company ChoicePoint announced that it had given information on approximately 150,000 subscribers to about 50 fraudulent businesses.   • More public awareness

    Yes, the government regulation is important and needed. Meanwhile, I think it is good to have more public awareness on how important for them to know the level of security policies and procedures implemented by the companies they are deciding to keep their valuable information and/or assets. This might pursue more companies to adopt better guidelines and more frequent reviews to improve them.

  • Why not...

    Why not use some sort of Digital Shredder to make sure that information is not floating around? Aren't there software programs out there that protect information when it's sent over the internet like the Anonymizer Enterprise Chameleon. Why are our banking institutions not keeping up with the times, it really is ridiculous that they do not have stricter security when it comes to our personal information! What a shame.
