For years, U.S. companies have urged the government to let them set computer-security standards of their own. Some experts think business may have missed its chance to prove the government's help isn't needed. A recent string of incidents at data brokers, retailers and other businesses--exposing at least half a million U.S. citizens to identity theft--has placed the private sector under increased scrutiny.
