Mirosoft has distributed an invitation to a press conference involving Bill Gates, Palm, Inc. president Ed Colligan, and Verizon Wireless president and CEO Denny Strigl. The conference is scheduled to take place this Monday (Oct 26.). It’s pretty clear where this is heading: a device from Palm (probably a Treo) that supports the new Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system and that’s provisioned by Verizon Wireless. Based on Engagdet’s photos of such a Treo, rumors of the device surfaced about a month ago. I guess they were true. Suffice to also say that it’s curtains for the PalmOS; a prediction that I’ve been making since the PocketPC first came out. Personally, I think that the recently acquired Palmsource had an opportunity to correct its course by tapping the Java developer base as Research in Motion has done with it’s BlackBerries. But instead of defaulting to Java as the development platform of choice, it stuck with the PalmOS (Java was merely an option for licensees). If the rumors are right, this move by Palm, Inc. is a great feather in Microsoft’s cap, a good momentum builder for Windows Mobile 5.0, and a pretty good ding against Mobile Java.

Did you know you can take part in these discussions with your ZDNet membership?I'm curious to know if they would still be making other PDA's based on Linux or will that decision be made based on the sales of non Windows based Palm PDA's.
