The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Dell is working on a mobile Internet device that would run on Google’s Android operating system and compete with Apple’s iPod Touch, which is basically an iPhone without the phone service.

It’s tough to say whether this device will ever see the light of day. The Journal story cites unnamed sources, one of which who says that device may make it to market in the second half of 2009, could be delayed or be scrapped altogether.

The latter wouldn’t be unheard of for Dell. Last year, there was talk about a Dell-branded music player that would use the software from Zing, a company that was acquired by Dell in 2007. But that player never materialized and Dell, in a blog post last year, acknowledged some misinformation spreading through the blogosphere and said its efforts were “never about a music player.” In its story today, the WSJ noted:

People familiar with the effort said Dell began developing the device last year, after the company aborted an attempt to compete with Apple in the music-player business. Some of the engineers working on the music player were then assigned to help develop the small mobile device. One Dell engineer has been in charge of customizing Google’s free Android software, which is currently used in cellphones, for the device, they said.

Earlier this year, Dell appointed an executive, Ain McKendrick, to be in charge of mobile Internet devices at the company. The Dell spokesman said that as the senior director and general manager of mobile Internet devices at Dell, Mr. McKendrick role involves “looking at future products in play for future consideration.”

Dell did not comment on the Journal’s story.

It's a re-worked Axim

Yeah, I have a mobile Dell Internet device. It's called the Axim X51v, has 640x480 vga and can support large capacity CF/SD cards as well as support for other CF or SD peripherals. Also, there's updated ROM images I've found that have newer versions of WM and assorted apps that breath new life into this device. Still happily using my Axim.
Here's what I think: This device will be a touch screen music/video player, Internet browser, email, EReader, and basic gaming machine with 8-32 GB of storage. The screen will be bigger than an iPod Touch - sized like the Kindle 2 screen, without all the bulk of the useless plastic frame and keyboard.

And you base your allegation upon what?

I mean, the stated rumor was that the music device was to be based on software from Zing, and this runs Android. Does Zing write software which runs under Android?

All MIDs should optionally support cell phone calls, SMS/MMS, LBS, etc. (i.e. basic smartphone functionality). If Dell's MID is running Android, it would only need the corresponding hardware to enable this functionality. This would make Dell's MID even more attractive to mobile operators, since the operators would be able to generate revenue from phone calls, SMS/MMS, etc., in addition to basic data contracts.

...not just a Portable Media Player. The iPod Touch seems to be selling fairly well without the SIM card.

Bringing Back Their PDA
bruceg@... 30th Jun 2009
IF this is true, all they are doing is bringing back their PDA. Of course, the Axim PDA used Windows Mobile, but it had WiFi and Bluetooth and could run hundreds of programs. The screen is the same size as the iPhone/iTouch, I believe. It depended on insertable cards for the bulk of its memory, so more built-in storage would be nice. As much as I like and use my Axim, I believe the future is in integrated phone-PDA systems such as the iPhone.

Dell's new product is short on what the market looks for, and long on trying to leverage Dell's distribution. Why would this product be desirable, given the capabilities and pricing of an iPhone, Pre or netbook? Dell must change its operating model to regain profits, and that won't happen by trying to push uninteresting new products on customers. Read more at http://www.ThePhoenixPrinciple.com

I believe that the market need competition, I know of designer that is working on the processor for a device and they are working with Dell. I hope this Device is good looking, and has just as good features as an Iphone.

I wouldn't carry a mini 9 on my pocket, that's an advantage of the ipod touch. If it just had GPS and bluetooth I'd be in.
