Former Microsoft exec Blake Irving was named Chief Product Officer at Yahoo, taking the place of Ari Balogh, who will be leaving the company in early June for personal reasons.

Irving, who was delighted to "yodel my first purple-hued shout out" on Yahoo's corporate blog this morning, will start on May 17. He will report directly to CEO Carol Bartz.

Separately, the company also announced that Prabhakar Raghavan will "continue to lead innovative efforts at Yahoo! Labs as Chief Scientist." and will also report to Bartz. In the company's press release, Bartz said:

Blake brings to Yahoo! genuine large scale Internet expertise from a mature company known for world-class technology. In addition, Prabhakar has invaluable technological insights and expertise that I look forward to having my executive team hear more directly. With leaders like Blake and Prabhakar, I am confident that we will increase technological innovation and deliver against our vision to be the center of people's online lives.

Irving was most recently a professor at Pepperdine University's Graziadio School of Business and Management. At Microsoft, he was corporate vice president of the Windows Live Platform group.
