• I'm sure all of them are great, each for their own reasons.

I still have my original Playstation and I consider it to be one of the products I have gotten the greatest dollar per use value in my life. What the original Playstation did for console gaming when it came out is one of the big events in gaming, probably only exceeded by the introduction of the first original Atari consoles and the introduction of the first Nintendo gaming systems.

But when it comes to what I would purchase today if I was going out to buy something tomorrow? The XBox 360 wins out by a fair margin. Its largely a question of cost. All the systems are fairly pricey, but the new Playstation 3 is a device thats pushing the outer limits for what should even be reasonably asked for a gaming console.

Maybe if I had a lot more money then I could figure out what to do with I might give the Playstation 3 a go, but I already have seen what a great unit the XBox 360 is, and its pretty hard to justify the extra cash unless someone can show me how the Playstation is surprisingly better. And from what I have seen so far, its a fine machine no doubt about that, but its not worth anything significantly more then an XBox 360.

As far as the Wii goes, I admire what they are trying to do, and if that form of gaming is what catches your interest then the Wii is the only game in town for you. But I still am not too excited by the new gaming style of the Wii so my hard earned bucks go to the XBox 360 on this call.

• Have some sympathy for Sony.

You're right that the PS 3 is very expensive, and, worse, Sony loses a great deal of money on each device sold.

The considerate person will avoid the PS 3 to help Sony. eBay resales are callous, particularly because Sony does not receive any of the excess paid.

PS 3... the Cabbage Patch Doll of a new generation.

• PS3 because it's an Open Platform - runs other OSs

http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/index.html
PLAYSTATION?3 allows a third-party system software to be installed on it besides its system software provided by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Such third-party system software is referred to as "Other OS".

Including Linux...

Thanks to Magazine based DVD, soon EVERY PS3 will be a Linux desktop.

• Hmmm

You can run Linux on an original Xbox so the fact it runs on PS3 fails to impress me, you also forget to take into account that Linux sucks more than a warehouse full of Dysons.

• yeah that ought to impress girls... (nt)

• Definitely the PS3

1. High Def games
2. Plays my PS2 games
3. High Def movies via Blu Ray

Easy choice for me, since I have an HDTV.

• Definitely the XBox 360

1. High Def games
2. Plays my Xbox 1 games (all the ones I care about)
3. High Def movies via HD-DVD
4. Stream music/pictures/movies to XBox from PC
5. Download TV shows and movies (including HD) to Xbox 360
6. Download new and classic arcade games via Arcade Marketplace

Easy choice for me, since I have an HDTV.

BTW, HD-DVD is currently winning the high def war:

• One problem

The X-Box 360 doesn't come with and HD-DVD player. At least none of the ones I've seen in stores. I want an X-Box 360 so I've checked and HD-DVD really isn't an issue as I don't think the format will last long so the X-box 360 not having the HD-DVD player is a boon, I'm not paying extra for dead technology.

• This is what my kids are getting for Xmas

http://www.handheldmuseum.com/Mattel/FB.htm
Mattel electronic football all the way!

If they don't like it, they can just go back to their jobs in the coal mine without dessert.

• Whoa!

I had one of those and it was a blast. Your kids are so lucky!

• Blast from the past!

Wow, I havent seen that in years! I used to love to play with that!

How much did that set you back? Like $3k or $4k? You cant find those anymore at all.

• Waiting for more Wii

I totally forgot the Wii was coming out this past weekend - what a dunce I am - I have been looking forward to this for quite some time. Ah well, hopefully there will be some more in shortly.

• Wii? Waaaa!

I believed all the stories about how there would be so many Wii's in stock that I wouldn't have to worry about it. Sunday comes, and everybody is sold out.

• For the price of a PS3...

...you can get a 360 and a Wii, the former of which already has an
established library and solid online user base, and the latter of
which has more innovation than any videogame system since...
well, the Nintendo DS.

Hope all you PS3 owners are happy staring at the case while the
rest of us are having fun playing good games.

• Stoked.

I can't wait to get a Nintendo Wii! Man, let me tell you.... I have
not been so genuinely excited about a new system since I
bugged my mom to get me a NES from toys r' us soooo many
years ago, so I could duck-hunt and excite-bike with my
buddies.
17 years later, and I can't wait to throw my first "adult" Wii party.
Long live Nintendo.

yes long live nintendo, once i get the money im getting a Wii!!!!

• None are perfect ... What I want is ...

A 360 with an internal HD DVD drive, not some clunky ugly external add on, and an HDMI port wouldn't hurt. Come on MS, come out with an XBox 360 v 2.0 and leave the 1.0 as an entry level box. Jeeez.

The Playstation, as documented, has it's own issues as well. First of all it's un available unless you're out of work and can take a week off to stand in line or want to over pay on eBay. No thanks Mr Sony.

Wii, are you kidding me? Puhlease.

• The problem for me is that only the PS3 is enough of a leap forward

The xbox360 doesn't seem to me to be enough of a leap forward.
The Nintendo Wii is Ok, but all it really seems to offer over the PS2 generation is a new controller. (and Opera browser).

I wasn't blown over by the 360 graphics.
I think this *might* happen with the PS3. The 8 cores could do a lot of physics work, giving a really rich experience.
Time will tell.
I'll wait a few months to see what games come out
for the PS3.

I'm anti Microshit all the way, but I hate the japs even more, so it's an xbox 360 for me.
