Android 1.5 available for installation on Android Developer Phone

Android 1.5 available for installation on Android Developer Phone

Summary: Do you have a developer version of the T-Mobile G1 Google Android device? Then you can now update the device to Android version 1.5 and tell us all about it. The Android Developers Blog makes it clear that this update is currently intended for developers and not for those looking to use their Android device for daily, regular usage. HTC has clear directions and the image packages needed to update your developer Android device and it really makes me wish I had purchased one of these rather than the T-Mobile branded version. Those of us with the T-Mobile G1 should get the update sometime in May, at least that is what the tea leaves indicate.

Let me be clear here too, if you own a T-Mobile G1 branded Google Android device DO NOT ATTEMPT TO UPDATE using these HTC images and methodology.

For those adventurous souls with a T-Mobile G1 you could check out the XDA Developers site to try out some hacking with your device. If you have any concerns at all about bricking your G1, then I do not recommend you try these methods and instead you should wait for the official T-Mobile G1 update.

UPDATE: I threw caution to the wind and went ahead and updated my T-Mobile G1 to Android 1.5. The on-screen keyboard is more useful than I thought it would be since it saves me from having to open up the G1 to enter quick text in search boxes, etc. Other things I have noticed so far:

  • The on-screen keyboard supports haptic feedback (present as a toggle option)
  • Video capture is supported natively
  • Video playback is available in the Gallery application
  • There is a quick overview view/toggle in the browser and the zoom buttons are MUCH better
  • There is a filter when managing applications (All, Running, and Third-party)

Anyone update their device to 1.5?
