CES: Samsung Infuse 4G pushes display size to 4.5 inches

By | January 5, 2011, 11:00am PST

Summary: AT&T is going to be getting the largest display smartphone thanks to Samsung and the Super AMOLED featured Infuse 4G.

CES 2011

It looks like AT&T is setting itself up with a very solid Android lineup as their exclusive to the Apple iPhone ends this year. In addition to the HTC Inspire 4G we have the Samsung Infuse 4G that continues the Samsung Galaxy S line. The major differentiator for this device is the huge 4.5 inch Super AMOLED display and according to the information Engadget posted it sounds like the 4.3 inch crowd won’t even notice the difference in their hand.

If you have seen the Super AMOLED displays on the Galaxy S line of devices then you know how Samsung can rock a beautiful display. The tops for smartphones has been 4.3 inches seen on HTC devices, but that was LCD technology. This new 4.5 inch display will be quite welcome with Samsung’s Super AMOLED technology.

In addition to the 4.5 inch super display, the Inspire 4G will rock a 1.2 GHz Hummingbird processor, HSPA+ 4G data, 8 megapixel back camera and 1.3 megapixel front camera. It will likely launch with Android 2.2 and TouchWIZ UI. We don’t yet know the pricing or availability of this device, but it looks like AT&T customers will have plenty of choices when Verizon adds the iPhone.

what's next the 6" smartphone? those geeks will never get it. it is a phone! a bigger screen isn't better, it makes the portability worse. but i know, never get in the way of a meaningless bullet point on a feature list.

Well, as long as it fits in a pocket, I'm fine with it.

Edit: Should have meant in a reasonably-sized pocket...
The phone uses Super AMOLED Plus - 50% higher sub-pixel density, higher brightness with better contrast and improved outdoor visibility.

I tried to hunt down the dimensions of the phone, but the only one that seems to be published is the thickness which at 9mm is said to be the thinnest Android phone available. There are many non tilted top view photos around though (e.g. http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i997_infuse_4g-pictures-3705.php) from which the dimensions can be estimated. My guess is: 127x68 (try it yourself - the screen if it is exactly 4.5" with a 5:3 AR is 98.0x58.5 mm, measure the phone on your computer screen and scale all measurements so you get a match to the screen size). Anyway, here is a comparison:

HxWxT in mm
Infuse 4G 127x68x9
Droid X 128x66x10
Evo 4G 122x66x13
Streak 153x79x10
(other phones are from http://www.google.com/phone/)

So this new phone is no taller than a Droid X and 2 mm wider than the Droid X (and Evo 4G). That doesn't seem too bad to me and I hope Samsung has some success with this phone so that other manufacturers also try the larger screen sizes. Now the Streak was too big for a phone (it isn't going into any normal size pants pocket), but this phone seems great to me. My problem is that they didn't bump the resolution to be competitive with Motorola's QHD (960x540) phones. I still want 1280x720 in 4.4-4.6" diagonal and it looks like I'm not going to get it this year, but I'd rather choose a smaller screen with more pixels than the screen size I want with less pixels. Sorry Samsung - maybe next time.
