CTIA 2010: Goodbye Palm Pre Plus, hello Sprint HTC EVO 4G

By | March 23, 2010, 2:28pm PDT

Summary: I have been debating over a few devices lately and today Sprint and HTC made my decision drop dead easy. The Palm Pre Plus is going back while the HTC Sprint EVO 4G will be mine as soon as it is available.

You know sometimes the stars and planets align just perfectly on my world to make decisions seem crystal clear. I have one week left before my Verizon Wireless Pre Plus 30 days is up and T-Mobile is releasing the HTC HD2 this week so I have been struggling with what to do with my devices. Sprint and HTC made my choice dead simple today with the announcement of the upcoming HTC EVO 4G. The device takes everything I loved about the HTC HD2, the Google Nexus One, the HTC Hero, and Sprint Overdrive and combines it into one magical package. The HTC EVO 4G looks like the perfect device for power users like me who want the Exchange support of Sense, extremely capable Gmail and Google integration, and the fastest wireless network available in my area. My Palm Pre Plus will be going back to Verizon this week.

The HTC Sprint 4G includes the following specifications:

  • 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor
  • 8.0 megapixel camera with HD-capable video and front facing 1.3 megapixel camera
  • Integrated 4G radio with hotspot capability to share with up to eight devices
  • 4.3 inch capacitive touchscreen display
  • Android 2.1 OS
  • New HTC Sense experience with Friend Stream
  • FM radio
  • Integrated kickstand for viewing movie content
  • 1GB ROM and 512MB RAM

This device will let me do everything I ever wanted on a mobile phone and also let me share my 4G connection with my new iPad. I am interested in seeing if we will be able to use that forward facing camera too.

I also look forward to having a reasonable Sprint plan where you get calls and data at the lowest price around. I get an amazing 4G signal here in my area and cannot wait for the release of this device. The HTC EVO 4G is coming this Summer and I will be first in line to buy one, no matter what it costs.

I think webOS is very good (maybe even better than Android), but the hardware is lackluster and Palm needs to take action now. I will miss the webOS Synergy experience, the great games, and other applications, but the Sprint EVO is just too good of a device for someone like me not to make the move to.

  • Stupid remark at the end
" I will be first in line to buy one, no matter what it costs."...No problem with being first in line to buy one, but at any cost???..they are already making a kill with what they charge for their plans, and options...Please contain yourself and don't be so stupid to give them a good excuse for charing high prices. I just wish consumers would get a bit smart.

  • In response Steve Jobs had to say....
"Can't this lawsuit move any faster!?!?!?!"

If anyone questions why he sued HTC in particular now you're blind. And one cat here I remember tried to make the case that somehow Motorola was leading Android lmao.

  • Cost?
So any idea at the price of this thing? Or at least a range? I get a 2yr upgrade on April 1st with sprint; in which I was going to buy the Samsung Moment w/ Google, but if the price is right (I'm in college) I think I would like to hold off on that phone. I'll be one of the early birds in line at launch day to get this guy...perhaps. Did I mention I heard at CTIA today Sprint reveled Blackboard for Sprint phones! Anyone know if this will be an app. or exactly what? Thank you for it anyways Sprint!

I wouldn't return your Palm Pre "this week". This phone doesn't exist yet. It's not out. It's SUPPOSED to be out "sometime" this summer IF Apple doesn't hold it up with a lawsuit. So...take a breath. Apple also has a new phone coming out this summer, and Palm SHOULD (but I haven't heard anything about it so sadly not likely)

Sprint has ****** coverage in my area (western PA), and the only _real_ options are Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. Right now, I'm waiting for my AT&T contract to run out so I can switch to Verizon, and hopefully by then they will have 4G coverage and a matching 4G Android phone in my area. I really do like the HTC Evo, and I think you made a smart decision.

I must say that i'm ecstatic by this announcement.
This a true mobile 4g wireless router. When I get my
hands on this beast, I'm cancelling my home internet
connection with TimeWarner ASAP! I will use this to
power my Desktop, Netbooks, BlueRay Player and
whatever else my friends and family bring over. Dear
Sprint and Clear Wire, I'm willing to pay upwards
$100/month so long as you *Do Not Cap* my bandwidth
and i'll also pay upwards $300 for the Hardware so
long as an LTE antenna lies dormant in the chipset
enabling me to use Big Reds wires if i'm out of WiMaxx
    covg.

It doesn't come out til the Summer. You're kidding me with
this false sense of confidence. You have no idea what sort of
phones companies will announce for this summer, this is just
the first of many. Learn about a product before you blindly
    start hyping it up.

I know the Sprint EVO is an amazing phone and I'm not
knocking it at all, your know it all confident attitude is what
    bothers me.

  • Sprint HTC? Battery Guzzler
I think you'll enjoy your Sprint HTC 4G for 1 hr at a time after having to recharge it for another 5 hrs or so. A mobile smartphone demanding more power through a 4G network, a 1GHz processor, with 480x800 pixels sounds wonderful but will likely leave you with frustration and regret after it turns into paper weight.

You should think twice about jumping the gun. Not even the iPhone or Palm Pre have very good battery life; even moreso with the Nexus One... HTC 4G will surely hold the record for top battery guzzler!

  • EVO has more capacity
The Palm Pre has a 1150 mAh battery, whereas the
EVO's battery runs in at 1500 mAh.

  • 4G network a big risk
The 4G network is likely to fill up very quickly and slow down. Expect speeds to diminish in a few months
Buying a phone for a 4G network is a big risk.

The HD2 has almost identical features, is cheaper and has likely longer battery life (with 3G using less energy than 4G).
    A much safer choice.

Wow, that's a lot of "snark" all in one article. For me the choice was between BBerry and Pre, since I use my phone for work. Aside from the battery issue, which all SPhones struggle with, Pre delivers what I need. Everything else is just a toy.

  • Dont be hasty!
1GB is the EVO's Internal storage. Of course you have the option for more space with an external micro SD up to 32GB! Unlike the your iPhone this one have multitasking, have 4g, you can use it like an access point connecting up to 8 devices, Android is better system than the iPhone and... Of course you have 3 times more apps in apples app store, you have more time in the market! But know this: Android has grown faster in 2 years than the apple app store in the same time. Rounding up: EVO Beats the iPhone right away!
