Does the AT&T HTC HD7S really have improved landscape support? Answer is NO

Does the AT&T HTC HD7S really have improved landscape support? Answer is NO

Summary: Some AT&T press shots show the Games and People hub in landscape, which is currently not possible on any WP7 device. Is this a mistake or an upcoming update?

I like my HTC HD7 on T-Mobile and as Andrew posted today AT&T and HTC announced it will be coming to AT&T as the HD7S soon. The HD7 is one of the most popular WP7 devices so it is great to see AT&T also picking it up too. It is essentially an HD7 with the NoDo update and nearly the same older tech, but I wonder if the screenshots posted over on Engadget are accurate because they show the Games and People hubs working in landscape orientation.

As you know the inconsistencies in dealing with portrait and landscape were a pet peeve of mine in the HTC Arrive from Sprint. We have not received any word that better landscape support would be provided in an update or on certain devices so I sent an email to my Microsoft contacts to see if this is simply an error in marketing images or if Microsoft will be providing better landscape support in the near future.

UPDATE: It seems that AT&T is just making up images for marketing the HD7S and there is not landscape support as shown in their product images. Microsoft confirmed that there is currently no landscape support for the Games hub.

  • Who cares? WP7 is JUNK

    Plain and Simple. In 5 years they will be an also ran like Palm.

    • It took you less time to become an also ran

      @itguy08
      what like 5 weeks maybe?

    See ya wp7, a feature short OS nobody wants that has all the flair of Steve Ballmer's wardrobe.

    • You have no flair. Lame - 2.6 for effort, unoriginal though

      @Alan Smithie
      You really should just remain silent and be thought an idiot rather than post something and prove it!

      @Alan Smithie <br>If nobody is wanting it, why would AT&T get another phone in their racks in addition to the current 3 WP7 line up?

      Really if it's so bad, why do you need to comment? Surely the inherent badness of the MS product will mean no-one will buy it.

      The trolls are getting restless, WP7 is obviously succeeding ;-)

    Gee, Matthew. Were you too busy with your Thunderbolt to take a quick drive over to Sprint and check out the Arrive to see if it supported landscape mode? For someone who enjoys WP7 and owns 2 WP7 devices, you don't seem to 'up' on WP7 capabilities...

    • Did you follow the link above to my HTC Arrive first look?

      @1019902735 Hmm, if you cared to follow the link I put in this post you would see I already covered the poor landscape support seen in the HTC Arrive. Who is not "up" on WP7?

        @palmsolo (aka Matthew Miller)...apparently my point was EXACTLY what you later 'updated' your post with: the answer is no! Point #2: Your blog/question: pointless; and if you had been 'up' on WP7, surely you wouldn't have asked?

    Landscape support would be up to Microsoft. This is not a hardware thing but an OS thing. THe Hardware makers incorporate things like motion sensors, an gyroscopes, it is up to the software maker to make use of those items.

    • Yes, obviously, thats why he asked microsoft and not HTC

      Some things support both and some don't. He was asking MS if games/people moved from portrait only to both in the software update or if the pics that showed such were faked.

    • True, but HTC is known to push the limits

      @Rick_K HTC is quite innovative and pushed the old Windows Mobile OS much further and faster than Microsoft with things like capacitive touch support before the OS even officially had it. Thus, I wouldn't put it past them to come up with a solution like this either.

        To be honest, if I were HTC I would seriously consider dropping Windows phone 7 series OS, because MIcrosoft is not paying them to fix the OS.
