fring lets you make Skype calls from your iPhone, available for free

Summary: Back in April I wrote about the availability of fring on the iPhone, but at that time you needed a jailbroken iPhone to use it and the iPhone 3G wasn't yet available. You may recall that fring is a VoIP application that lets you use Skype, MSN, Google Talk, ICQ, Twitter, Yahoo!, and AIM clients to chat and instant message. Well, the good news is that fring is available now for free in the Apple App Store and can be loaded on your iPhone without any jailbreaking required.

fring will run on your iPhone or iPod Touch and works over the WiFi network. You can even make SkypeOut calls with fring so if you are traveling fring may be the application you want to make low cost and free calls on the road.

I have been using fring on S60 and Windows Mobile devices for a while now and think it is a great application to load on your device. Plus, it is free so you might as well give it a try, right?

  • I've been waiting for an application like this . . .

Great to see that some really useful applications are
starting to make their way through the Apple screening
    process.

If you're interested, you can read about my experiences
with many of the web and native apps I've used since my
original iPhone and more recent iPhone 3G purchases on
my blog at http://johnkendrick.wordpress.com Just click

Gotta run now and get my "fring"! John

Anyone know of any iPhone VOIP Apps that can connect to VOIP phone systems that businesses use such as CallManager by Cisco? Thats what I would like to see. As it stands now I have 3 phones I carry. Personal Cell (iPhone), Work Cell (Motorola Nextel POS), and my WiFi phone at work. Its a pain.

Now if we can get them to put the camera in the front of the iphone we can get video chat and that would change the game. To do video chat on your phone, that's the future we all use to see on Star Trek, the Jetsons.
