Ice Cream Sandwich update rolling out to select HTC devices in March

Summary: HTC announced that owners of many of their current Android smartphones will start seeing the ICS update in March.

SHARE:

I keep swapping my T-Mobile SIM between the HTC Radar 4G and Galaxy Nexus from Samsung. Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) on the Galaxy Nexus is very compelling, but I am not overly impressed with the Samsung hardware. The camera is OK, but should be better and I really would love to see ICS on a fantastic piece of hardware like the HTC Amaze 4G. HTC announced on their Facebook page that ICS is coming to their devices starting in March.

According to the site, here is the rollout schedule:

HTC has been working hard to get its Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades ready, and we’re excited to announce that our first round of ICS upgrades will roll out by the end of March for the HTC Sensation, HTC Sensation 4G and HTC Sensation XE, followed soon there after by the HTC Sensation XL.

In addition, we can confirm Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades will be coming later this year to the HTC Rezound, HTC Vivid, HTC Amaze 4G, HTC EVO 3D, HTC EVO Design 4G, HTC Incredible S, HTC Desire S and HTC Desire HD. Stay tuned for more updates on Ice Cream Sandwich releases in the coming weeks.

I am looking forward to seeing ICS with HTC Sense on Android since Sense is the one custom UI I do like to use, primarily for its widgets and Exchange email utility. I wish it was coming sooner to all devices, but it is nice to see they at least confirm it is coming to quite a few of their current device.

Lame! My understanding is that the ICS update was promised EARLY this year for the Evo 3d, with HTC touting its excellent upgrade record. They never gave a date, and now it's pushed back to 'later this year'. I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't see it till Thanksgiving at this point.

Everyone who has the slightest bit of tech know-how is aware of the continuing problem of Android devices not being updated by the manufacturers and/or telcos - often despite promises. I dare so that you would have been aware of this when you bought your Android device . . . but you bought it anyway!

@Habiloso Wow, you are clueless! HTC is the best at updating their phones and I am certain they will continue to be such.

No HTC Thunderbolt even though its only 9 months old.

    Ridiculous.

@wendellgee@... If the Incredible S is getting it, the Thunderbolt is getting it.

  • Does It Really Matter To A Non-Technical Phone Owner?

Most people don't know or care what version of the O/S is on their phone. They just want it to work.

Ask 100 people with an Android phone what version of Android is on their phone. Guess what? 99 will say "Huh? Version of Android?!? What are you talkin' about?"

This gives the carriers NO incentive to push the updates out to the great unwashed masses.

@sismoc HTC is very good with updates in spite of all the BS being spread around these parts.

Most of the average users I've talked to about their Android phones don't even know that they're running Android. :) That's how much they care. As you say, as long as it works for them, they couldn't care less.

Tech knowledge is not the exclusive domain of any particular sphere of users by brand. There are just as many uninformed users in all brands. I'd venture to say that many iPhone users only know what they have only because it's fashionable not because they are smarter. Same reason people who wear over priced bluejeans know exactly what brand they have.

That kind of makes the whole "feature" war between Android and iPhone pointless then, doesn't it?

And while I'm sure there are quite a few iPhone users who have no idea what version of iOS they have, I bet there's a higher % than Android users. Apple simply does a better version of marketing it. The problem with Android is, as long as the OEMs and/or carriers drag their feet on upgrades, Google can't market it. Imagine Google creating an ad campaign like Apple did with iOS 5 and getting existing customers all amped up only to find out Samsung, HTC, Moto won't be pushing it out to their 9 month old phone for some time, if ever. Can't imagine the OEMs would be too happy with the backlash.
