If the iPhone comes to Verizon, will you get one in January 2011?

By | June 29, 2010, 12:36pm PDT

Summary: There are fairly widely reported issues with the iPhone 4 device on AT&T and now we hear even more rumors of Verizon getting an iPhone in January 2011. With Google Android devices offering a compelling experience, will you still get an iPhone if Verizon rolls one out?

Rumors of the Apple iPhone coming to Verizon are as old as the iPhone is and are getting a bit of a joke. The latest news is said to come from a couple of unnamed sources familiar with the plans that state Verizon will get an iPhone in January 2011. This may be a Verizon leak to give people enough doubt to keep from locking themselves into AT&T or it may just be more hopeful people. While I am sure the iPhone on Verizon will sell millions, given the apparently widespread lemon issues of the iPhone 4 and serious competition from the Google Android platform I honestly do not think I would buy an iPhone even if it was launched on Verizon.

I recently wrote why I won’t be buying an iPhone 4 and only one of those issues was related to AT&T. Verizon is pricier than even AT&T and I no longer find the iOS platform to be as functional for MY NEEDS as it once was. Google Android gives me everything I need (I am really not much of a gamer) and the devices keep getting better and better while being available from all four carriers.

I think we can be pretty confident that the iPhone will eventually launch on a carrier other than AT&T, but if it launched in January on Verizon would you pick one up? Or does Apple need to bring more to the iOS (notifications, widgets, etc.)?

RE: If the iPhone comes to Verizon, will you get one in January 2011?

Maybe. I have a July '07 iPhone. In Los Angeles, Verizon is better than AT&T. Complicating factors: the 4 looks good, but if I go for it this year, I'm on AT&T for two more and that bothers me. Also, I won't believe in a January ViPhone until Apple or Verizon announce it and if it didn't happen, I would have to flip to see if I was Vladamir or Estragon waiting for Godot.

If, if, if, I haven't replaced my iPhone and Verizon is available, then, I might.

We seem to be fully populated today with people who take their choice in platforms very seriously as an element of identity. Lemming? Sheep? I thought it was us Apple users who were the arrogant ones. The way I look at it, with phones everything has costs and benefits, even app stores. I'm glad Apple is not the only game in town and, for me, I'm satisfied with the deal Apple offers. If you like your non-iPhone and your freedoms and thus, Verizon carrying it matters not a jot, that is sufficient and respectable, whether those of us who like iPhones are lemmings or legions of brain surgeons, rocket scientists, and Jeopardy winners.

Remember. Just a phone.
How about putting up voting gadget ???

...give up my old phone that ACTUALLY WORKS for making calls without having to use a death grip or stand on my head or whatever iPhone users must do to keep from dropping calls? No thanks, I have no lemming in my ancestry.

Been using Apple products since 93....but my current phone is an Android and will continue to be for quite some time. I'm not putting up with Apple's antics when it comes to my phone.
I will get the best phone on the market that time. Right now there are 3-4 phones better then then iphone by jan it might be 40-50 phones better then the iphone. By june 100 phones will be better then the iphone.
Due to all the hype iphone sold 1.7m with zero hype in those same 3 days android sold 0.5mil

You try and company Android an OS that sells on many a phone by various vendors many more than the single Apple and you think it's impressive that "Android" sold in the same time period 0.5m? How many vendors does that number represent? Apple so kills when you are fair in your comparisons. This isn't Apple vs Android. This is Apple vs RIM, Apple vs Nokia, Apple vs HTC and the list goes on and on and on.

No, barring a major attitude adjustment on Apple's part. I'm very happy with my HTC Touch Pro 2. However, I don't like what I'm hearing about Windows Phone 7, so I would probably switch to an Android phone when it's time for me to upgrade.

No, because we'll already own two AT&T iPhone 4s (one already purchased and in use now, one that will be purchased as soon as the white iPhone 4 is available).
Um, in 7 months there will be so many better phones out than the iPhone that it will be irrelevant.
And be another sheep following the herd? Probably not. I like the freedom of my Droid, and not worrying about where I position my hand so I don't drop a call. Main reason I never went to the iPhone was because of AT&T's crappy service and dropped calls. Not going there thanks anyway.

I own the iPhone 1.0 and it's pretty damn cool--even on edge. Aside from lack of voice activated dialing and MMS and ATT's shotty service, I'm pretty happy with the feature sets.

I'm impressed with the 4.0. By 2011 the kinks will be worked out and if Verizon's "leave ATT" incentives are attractive enough I'll give them a try. If not, I may just sign on for another 2 years with ATT. Either way I'll be sticking with the iPhone product until something is head and shoulders better both in service, features and UI.

I would definitely get a Verizon iPhone.

But what will happen to AT&T:

AT&T will lose millions of new customers.

AT&T will lose millions of existing customers.

AT&T will *QUICKLY* lose millions of customers.
(The Great Exodus will happen in 1-2 months... not safely spread over 1-2 years.)

AT&T stock will drop. (Heck... it's already dropping... with just RUMORS of a Verizon iPhone.)

AT&T will lose millions of dollars.

AT&T will have even LESS money for cell tower upgrades.

AT&T will pretty much get what they deserve: Horrible service = big loss of customers.

I have been waiting for this for so long. I got an iphone and can't wait to dumb ATT, the worst carrier ever. You can't even get reception when you are passing their towers.
