Indian WP7 Dell Venue Pro appears with NoDo update

Summary: Microsoft's first update doesn't appear to be launching as smoothly as hoped, but a Dell Venue Pro available in India appears to have launched with NoDo already in place.

SHARE:

My Dell Venue Pro (see my review) is my favorite and primary Windows Phone 7 device. I still haven't gotten the pre-NoDo no functionality update, but according to FoneArena the Venue Pros shipping in India may already have the NoDo update installed with cut, copy, and paste capability.

The software version on their Dell Venue Pro is OS:7.0.7355.0 and Firmware:2250.1800.7355.202. For comparison my Dell Venue Pro shows OS:7.0.7004.0 and Firmware:2250.1500.7004.105. As I mentioned I do not yet have the pre-NoDo update that is proving quite problematic for Samsung devices and still hasn't even come to my T-Mobile HD7. You can check out the NoDo update on the Dell Venue Pro in the video from FoneArena below.

The first device in the US to launch with the NoDo update should be the Sprint HTC Arrive on 20 March. Even though I don't yet have any updates, it is encouraging to me to see a Dell Venue Pro running the update and hopefully it comes soon to all DVP devices.

  • Only Windows Phones have a Do Nothing update

    The "NoDo no functionality update".

Only Microsoft could come out with something like that.

Does it stand for "No Go"? ('cause the update bricks phones, it's a no go). Or is it short for "don't know". Or may be it stands for Do No(thing).

Microsoft seems to be struggling to add basic OS functionality to these phones, like Copy-And-Paste, and full multitasking.

    Now we hear that the Mango update (should that be called the Lemon update) won't be available until 2012.

      @zndac NoDo stands for "No Donut" making fun of Google's Android update that did nothing.

How is MS struggling to add multitasking to the OS? They've already demonstrated it 4 months after the product was released. It took Apple 3 years to bring multitasking to iOS. That isn't struggling? It took MS 4 months to bring copy and paste to WP7, it took Apple 2 years to add copy/paste and MMS.

A major update is coming just before the holiday season this year. MS is treating this platform the same way they treat Xbox; Minor updates in the Spring, major updates before the big Thanksgiving/Christmas holiday shopping season.

The important point is that the underlying OS is very solid very responsive and the WP7 marketplace is growing fast (already up to 10,000 apps). WP7 will pass BlackBerry app count in a couple of months. Developers aren't just saying WP7 is the easiest mobile OS to make software for, they're showing it.

        Considering that the iPhone was multitasking on day one, you've just shown a stunning display of ignorance.

        Or did you mean third party App multitasking?
        alsobannedfromzdnet
      • But the iPhone did not cut and paste on day one

        @alsobannedfromzdnet

        yet other phones had that feature well before that. All that show is a stunning display of ignorance on the part of those that made excuses for the iphone.

        So why is this an issue worth mentioning?

        @alsobannedfromzdnet

Having some kind of, sort of, maybe, iffy, looks like it but not really multitasking is not multitasking. Halting one thread while another is running is not multitasking. I know this is what apple what its minions to tell people "whos to say what is really multitasking" but sorry this is not a presidential election. Word mincing doesn't belong here. If you can't perform, just say so. Don't pretend you can.

      • Multi-Tasking

        @alsobannedfromzdnet I hate to point it out to you but that's what multitasking is. suspending one task so another can resume. this process is repeated many many times per second so that it seems to us like the processor is doing more than one thing at once. only multi-core processors can do multi tasks at a time.
        This post isn't quite in the right spot, I'm replying to the note below but cannot seem to put it there.

    • A lot of room for improvement in multi-tasking over Android

      @zndac

      or iOS for that matter. WebOS probably does the best job currently. If Microsoft does multi-tasking really well, which it looks like they may pull off, it will be completely worth the year wait. I am really getting tired of babysitting running programs in Android. I would kill for my Droid 2 to be able to flip from e-mail to a document that quickly. Instead I get sluggish application switching. Even scrolling through the application list is choppy.

      If you could maintain the speed of WP7 with multi-tasking you'd have a killer product. Especially the way you flip through running apps.

        Did you watch the video in the blog? If that is what you consider smooth and responsive, then your expectations are really low.
        Rick_K
      • Perhaps

        @LiquidLearner

        Although it looked more like user error than the phone. I didn't have the problem on a few Focus phones I setup.

      Your comments are not valid because you claimed here so many times that you don't own any of Microsoft products. Sorry.

    I cannot understand why we have to slide to see paste button after once paste.
    Eggry
    • RE: Indian WP7 Dell Venue Pro appears with NoDo update

      @Eggry Generally you would paste only once. Pasting multiple times is a special case. Also once you paste the UI make way for spelling suggestions.
      On IOS also you have to tap and hold every time if you have to do multiple pastes.

      The paste button is taking place of the auto correct, so it's better this way.

  • RE: Indian WP7 Dell Venue Pro appears with NoDo update

    This make perfect sense. Being that Microsoft?s, and Dell?s, call centers are in India, they should get it first. If for no other reason than to become familiar with it, so when customers call in with problems the call center personnel know how to fix it.

    • Not just that...

      India is a pretty major market already, there are quite a few people there who buy such devices. Don't underestimate India. I'm pretty well informed, working for an Indian manager with a lot of Indian colleagues.

        I am not underestimating anyone. Just that these are the people that will provide support, so it makes sense for them to have a head start using the product.

    • RE: Indian WP7 Dell Venue Pro appears with NoDo update

      @Rick_K

      Simple fact., in India all the phones are open market phones. So no operator locked ones. It makes perfect sense to recent rumors that the operators are responsible for the delay in the 'NoDo' update.
