Mobile applications highlighted at APPCON conference in August

By | April 14, 2010, 8:56am PDT

Summary: Applications are extremely popular on smartphones today and as a result a conference devoted to them is launching in Vegas this summer. APPCON will be held from August 24th through 26th.

I have both the HTC HD2 and Google Nexus One from HTC and have a tough time figuring out which one to carry on a daily basis (check out Mobile Tech Review’s head-to-head). One aspect that is a MAJOR differentiator between the two is the number and quality of applications seen on the Google Android platform compared to the Windows Mobile 6.5 platform. Apple brought attention to mobile applications through the ease of adding them to your device and millions spent on marketing apps. Applications are now an important consideration for smartphone buyers and developers. I was sent a note about an event being held this year in Vegas that is focused on mobile applications and wanted to let you all know about APPCON. This event will be held in Las Vegas from 24-26 August 2010 at Paris/Bally’s.

APPCON will have more than 40 sessions that are organized into three tracks; app development, IT integration, and the business of apps. Most sessions are cross platform with some specific sessions on timely topics, such as development for the iPad. Here is more on the three session tracks:

  • Developer: technical sessions for developers, architects and technical managers covering location-based services, cross-platform integration and gaming.
  • IT: technical/management sessions for IT experts evaluating, designing or implementing mobile support in the enterprise, with topics including MS Exchange integration, mobile App security and compliance issues.
  • Business: sessions covering the business, legal, sales, marketing and other aspects, including a special focus on small businesses and startups.

You can attend all sessions in one track or mix and match as you desire. They will also be having a Fast Pitch program that is advertised as marrying business with pleasure, featuring cocktails, food and as many six-minute App demos as possible in one evening. Thee is also a Hackathon contest that will see developer teams working to win app supremacy.

I am considering attending and covering for the blog since the hotels are about a third the price of what I pay to attend CES and it may be a nice time to vacation in the heat.
