New Android-powered Sidekick to be built by Samsung

New Android-powered Sidekick to be built by Samsung

Summary: Leaked details show that new Sidekick Android-powered model is likely to be built by Samsung, rather than Sharp. Samsung is a big player in the Android market and should have a solid device and brand to build on here.

T-Mobile will soon be launching a couple of new 4G smartphones, including the Samsung Vibrant 4G and the Sidekick 4G. The Sidekick name will live on and according to TmoNews Samsung will be the manufacturer instead of Sharp who has made all the Sidekicks to date. TmoNews also just posted pictures of the Sidekick 4G in the wild.

My oldest daughter is a huge Sidekick fan, but her Sidekick LX 2009 died a couple of months ago and she moved to my Palm Treo Pro I had lying around. This new Sidekick 4G looks to be similar to the Sidekick Slide models where the display slides up rather than flips around like the traditional Sidekicks have for years. I know my daughter was a huge fan of the flip so it will be interesting to see if she likes this slide up design.

The new T-Mobile Sidekick lineup will also be powered by the Android OS, which is a good choice IMHO. I am sure it will be a customized UI for the Sidekick brand and I look forward to hearing more about it.
