Nokia announces first 1 GHz smartphone, changes naming convention again

Summary: Nokia announced another Symbian smartphone and changed their naming convention that seems to cause more confusion than the current system.

SHARE:

We all know Nokia is working on hardware running Windows Phone for their high end smartphone line, but they still continue to roll out Symbian devices. With this latest announcement of the Nokia 500 they are changing their naming convention yet again. The Nokia 500 is also their first 1 GHz processor device, but I understand there is no GPU and according to All About Symbian it may have worse performance than the existing lineup of Symbian^3 devices.

The Nokia 500 will launch later this year at a low cost, EUR150 (about $215 USD), so it is understandable that the performance and specifications would be lower as well. It does appear to have decent specifications, but given that few in the US care about the Symbian OS it won't have much of an impact here. It will likely sell well in developing countries where Nokia and Symbian still do fairly well, but this won't help Nokia with any kind of market share or realized profits.

Specifications for the Nokia 500 include:

  • 1 GHz ARM 11 processor
  • Penta-band 3G data (Why can't ANYONE else get this right?)
  • 2GB memory with microSD card slot
  • 3.2 inch 640x360 pixesl display
  • 5 megapixel EDoF camera with no flash
  • WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS

Nokia has gone through a few naming conventions in the past and I thought their last one with Nseries, Eseries, Cseries, etc. seemed to make sense except when they started having multiple device names for some odd reason, such as the Nokia C6 that came in either -00 or -01 models. Anyway, their new naming convention, described in this Nokia Conversations post, goes back to 100,200,300,....900 series where they can use up to 99 numbers in each series to name phones. The Nokia 500 is the first in this new naming scheme and it is a mid-level smartphone. They already announced the Nokia N9 so they probably won't renumber it the 900, especially given that they are killing off MeeGo right after it launches anyway.

I don't think this new naming convention will do anything for the customer and will still present confusion. How are you supposed to know what device runs Symbian or S40? Will Windows Phone devices follow this convention too and if so then how will one tell if it is a WP or Symbian device? Seems to me sticking with the Series was just fine and maybe they should work on getting the Anna update out to those with 1-year old Nokia N8 devices instead of messing around with naming conventions.

    • You got to keep up to date on things

      @Theseus

Yes in the past they may have been doomed, but since adopting WP7 as their OS, they now have hope where there was none before.

I won't be updating my N8 to Anna as it is a big disappointment. The E6 I was sent to trial restarts continuously and apps such as AccuWeather don't have widgets (very few as it is). The final straw was when I found out there isn't an Anna version of Sports Tracker and the maker has not responded to a couple of questions asking if they're developing an Anna version.

I'll wait to WP Nokia is released before buying another Nokia device. The only reason I am keeping the N8 around is for the camera and reliability of the GPS. Sports Tracker is terrible on my Samsung Galaxy S as GPS usage is terrible on the S.

@NunYaBeezness I just paid $22.87 for an iPad2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $675 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, CoolCent. com

Finally a 1 GHZ processor (baseline for Adobe Flash 10.x Requirement, but now no GPU). Well, there you go!

A nice, informative, article Matthew. I've read about this release on a couple of other sites, and some of the posters are upset because there is no GPU; but they totally miss the fact that this is an entry level device! The price point and naming convention confirms 'entry level' status. Just not understanding how some folks want the specs to be similar to N8 at this price point. Some Nokia diehards are just unreasonable!

@1019902735 Yes u r right, ya when sumsung releases a phone with 1Ghz, they all think its the best in the world, but when nokia releases, they will find 101 reasons behind it - whether it has GPU, shirts, pants, etc. And this being a entry level phone, (people writting the reviews even do not know difference between entry level and high end) people are paid well by samsung to write reviews. Good way of marketing.keep it up.

2GB memory with microSD card slot
What type of memory is this, storage or RAM? IF it is just storage then the phone is only one step above a feature phone.

  • Nokia Nostalgia

I have to admit, that I do miss Nokia. Nokia had the best product, their phones were really easy to use, and still are. They have made one handed operation clean and smooth, this is the area they still have advantage of iPhone and Android. iPhone still has its weakness. Doing simple task such as pull up a contact to call someone is a lot more cumbersome than Nokia, because it almost always require two handed operation. Only until recently, there came out apps such as PhoneBook Classic that addresses this problem, still no sign of this type of product on Android phones. It would be alot better for Nokia if it has adopted Android. But teaming up with Microsoft has made it an more interesting situation. Almost like the three kingdoms period in Ancient China.

Apart from the acknowledged Penta-band 3G wireless, this is a big yawn, and nothing Samsung/HTC/Apple weren't shipping last year.

If Apple put this in their iPhone 5, T-Mobile with their strange choice of 3G Data GSM frequency in the USA would be back in the game.
