Nokia sues HTC, RIM, and Viewsonic for unauthorized use of their inventions

Summary: It seems that everyone sues each other in the wireless space and I know we are all tired of the lawsuits, but in some cases there are legitimate complaints to be discussed. We will see if this latest Nokia lawsuit is valid or if they are feeling the heat as their stock tumbles.

Today, Nokia issued a press release announcing that they filed patent suits in the U.S. and Germany against HTC, RIM, and Viewsonic to protect their innovations and intellectual property. I am not a lawyer and try to stay away from discussing legal issues in detail. For that kind of detailed coverage I recommend you visit The Verge and read what lawyer Nilay Patel has to say.

As detailed in their press release, a total of 45 patents are covered in the suit. Some of these include:

Nokia proprietary innovations protected by these patents are being used by the companies to enable hardware capabilities such as dual function antennas, power management and multimode radios, as well as to enhance software features including application stores, multitasking, navigation, conversational message display, dynamic menus, data encryption and retrieval of email attachments on a mobile device.

Nokia is one of the oldest companies in the wireless space and did indeed develop many innovations and technology that today's mobile phones integrate. Many companies license this technology from Nokia, but it sounds like Nokia sees that these particular companies are using what they developed without authorization. I know we are all tired of companies in the wireless space suing each other, but in some cases these lawsuits are legitimate. We'll have to see what develops from this latest lawsuit and I look forward to reading Nilay's in-depth coverage as he dives into the patents and the actual lawsuit details.

  • It seems to me...

...that the hundreds of millions of dollars all these companies pi$$ away on suing each other, could be better spent MAKING BETTER PRODUCTS!

Most of these so-called smartphones are actually not very good PHONES at all. Yes, they are reasonably good hand-held computers, but as TELEPHONES...most SUCK!

End of rant...getting my coat and leaving.

    • Agreed (emphasis on Greed)

Nokia finally started coming out of the stone age with their Lumia 900. Even though I don't have one, it's definitely on my "Interest Radar".... And that definitely begins to build up their public reputation.....

And then they pull this crap. Right back to square zero.

But back to the reply, I'd agree that most smart phones do not put the priority on PHONE aspect. They should call them "Portable Communication Devices" and take the word "Phone" out of it entirely.

    • Wrong. It's not better spent on making better products if someone else then

just rips off your better product by copying everything you spent millions inventing. That's what's happening and it slows progress to a crawl because no one can afford to compete when their expensive to develop ip is stolen. When these companies all license each others valueable ip then they all build on each others success and keep innovation happening at a much faster pace.

  • More friviolous lawsuits.

Makes you wonder how much extra Nokia (and by extension Microsoft was looking for?)

  • Info...?

Not much info to go on. Once we get some meat on what inventions we are talking about and how they are violated we can better discuss if these are frivolous or important lawsuits (i.e. swipe to lock/unlock type cr@p, in my opinion, is frivolous). Maybe Nokia is looking for a quick settlement to help them hold out for Windows Phone 8 (may be a STRONG indicator that Nokia doesn't have much left in it's arsenal right now to win any new customers, so they are just trying to get some quick $$ to keep them afloat).

  • Wrong. Nokias arsenal of WP and W8 tablets is fantastic right now.

And this is in no way quick money. These negotiations have been going on for a long long time. Apple recognized the validity of Nokias patents long ago and made a deal. Its only after legnthy exhaustive efforts that Nokias finally been left with no alternative but to sue these companies. They have a fiduciary duty to their shareholders to do so.
