Sprint Epic 4G reviews go live and it's another 4G winner for Sprint

By | August 15, 2010, 11:02pm PDT

Summary: Sprint seems to be hitting it out of the park with their latest Android devices and the EVO 4G follow-up and cousin is the Samsung Epic 4G. All reviews ranked the device quite high so Sprint customers have some great choices now.

I really love my smartphones and on Friday I pre-ordered a Sprint Samsung Epic 4G because I may pick one up on the 31st and didn’t want to risk having Sprint run out of the device before I had a chance to make up my mind. In order to help me decide if I move from my HTC EVO 4G to the Epic 4G, I wanted to check out detailed reviews and hopefully get one in my hand for evaluation before the release date. I haven’t received one to test yet myself, but several other sites obviously have as it looks like the embargo lifted tonight.

If you too are interested in this standout Samsung Galaxy S device launching on Sprint on 31 August, then I recommend you read through the following reviews:

Based on my own experiences with the T-Mobile Samsung Vibrant I wanted to see if GPS was still an issue and how the reception of the Epic 4G is with Sprint. I read through each of the above reviews in detail and some mentioned GPS was still an issue while one said it was fine. Reception does not seem to be a problem at all though and Samsung has stated they will release a GPS fix in September.

I am still not sure the Epic 4G is an upgrade to the EVO 4G and it looks like it comes down to the need for a hardware QWERTY keyboard or not. It looks like Samsung has a bit of work to do on refining the software and Android 2.2 is now out for the EVO 4G.

@wackoae umm..are you serious? Have you held an iPhone4 next to the Epic? The screens are night and day, as in the iPhone4 screen is many times crisper than the epic. Try looking at small text (zoom out on a webpage) on both screens. On the Epic it is all blurry and you can even see little black dots everywhere, like newsprint. It is not nearly as smooth and detailed as the iPhone4 screen. Pentile displays simply can not handle the detail that the Retina display can. I am by no means an Apple fanboy, I still don't like the iPhone. But I have to defend the iPhone 4 retina display, it is far far far far better than the super AMOLED display. However, the Epic screen is probably 2nd place. iPhone has 326 PPI, Samsung Galaxy/Epic has 233. Obviously the iPhone display is going to be more detailed.
If you are a fan of displays, then the Samsung Epic is an absolute no brainer as opposed to the Evo. I can say from having seen the Super AMOLED screen on the Samsung Captivate, that it is tied if not a close second to the iPhone 4's retina LCD.

I've been waiting for the right phone to upgrade from my aging Palm Pre, and this is probably as good as its going to get on Sprint until at least next summer.
@Playdrv4me You are making a great choice by upgrading to this phone. Especially going from the Palm Pre! The AMOLED screens are great, but not as crisp as the Iphone 4 but the Epic uses 30% less power then Iphone 4. RadioShacks are pre ordering now and have it for $249. Sprint stores are doing mail in rebates. The Shack does Instant Rebates!

... except for a few corners in the middle of a street somewhere in a mayor city. Everywhere else, it is a gamble.
@wackoae sorry but when is the last time you used Sprint??? I've had Sprint for over 5 years now and they are great! I live in the Central Valley of California. I went camping over the summer and where I was camping up about 6000 ft, only Verizon and Sprint had coverage! Plus my market was one of the first to get 4G. Try Sprint service. You have a 30 day trial period. If you don't like you can return without paying a dime!

How did the author get an epic so soon after the EVO without paying full price of like 500 bucks?
