T-Mobile and RIM announce BlackBerry Bold 9780 for $129.99

By | October 27, 2010, 8:51am PDT

Summary: The BB Bold 9700 is a great QWERTY keyboard device and the new Bold 9780 builds on that with the new BB 6 OS, more memory, and an upgraded camera.

I think the RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 is the best current BlackBerry smartphone, even beating out the newer Torch device. Thus, I was pleased to hear today that T-Mobile will be offering the new BlackBerry Bold 9780 starting on November 17th for just $129.99.

Specifications of the Bold 9780 include:

  • High resolution color display (480 x 360 pixels, 2.44 in diagonal measurement)
  • HSDPA support (3.6 Mbps)
  • Built-in GPS and Wi-Fi with UMA support (802.11 b/g)
  • 5 MP camera (JPEG Encoding, CMOS) with Auto focus, Image stabilization, Flash and 2X Digital Zoom.
  • 512 MB Flash, microSDHC memory card slot (up to 32 GB)
  • 624 MHz processor
  • BlackBerry 6 operating system

Doing a side-by-side with the current Bold 9700 we can see that improvements include the new BB 6 OS, 5 megapixel camera (vs 3.2 megapixel) and 512MB memory (vs 256MB). These are great improvements and we see that the form factor and dimensions are exactly the same so why not build upon a solid device, right? The price is also extremely attractive at $129.99 with a 2-year contract.

My wife and I are planning a trip to the T-Mobile store on November 10th and she was thinking about picking up a HD7 as she finally moves to a smartphone plan. However, she has always been a big QWERTY keyboard fan and she may end up walking out with a white Bold 9780 instead. The great thing is that she will get the chance to try these various models out in the store and it will be very interesting to see what phone she decides on. Oops, I made a mistake and as the press release states the Bold 9780 won’t be available until the 17th. I will have her look at the Bold 9700 though since the hardware is virtually the same.

Much ado about nothing or....

fool's gold?

So we still get excited about a hundred bucks or so on a 2 to 3 grand expenditure?
I'll have to see a video or preview its operating system, but if it's changed for the better, I just might be buying.
I'm a longtime BlackBerry business user. I got the TMo 9700 for Christmas last year, worst BlackBerry I've owned among a total of five (although I wasn't crazy about the Curve either). After 7 months I had enough, went back to my ancient BB 8700G. Missing the newer bells & whistles but it's a true workhorse. If something better isn't on the horizon for T-Mobile soon, I will reluctantly give up on BlackBerry since TMo is my company provider and they pay for my phone. It was so much better when BlackBerry was a serious business device, before RIM decide to compete with smartphone competitors by trying to make them do everything but sing Happy Birthday.

I love BB IM and it's mail capabilities, and was truly hoping the Torch would arrive on T-Mobile. It will be a G2 in less than 2 weeks once I get to full upgrade subsidy. Oh, for the author, check it out in store, but between Costco, HEB (grocery chain in Texas), Wirefly, you can invariably find the phones $50 to $100 cheaper than at the store.
