T-Mobile G1 RC33 update rolling out OTA, not the cupcake update

T-Mobile G1 RC33 update rolling out OTA, not the cupcake update

Summary: All of us T-Mobile G1 owners are waiting for the cupcake update, but in the meantime TmoNews reports that the RC33 update is rolling out now and is NOT the cupcake update. The official word is that the update will appear OTA on devices from 5 February until 16 Februay, but some are reporting that it is already starting to arrive on their devices. It has not yet shown up on my G1 here in the Seattle area.

The new enhancements included with this RC33 update include the following:

  • Ability to save photos or files by tap and hold on a file
  • Automatic check for system updates
  • Google Voice Search feature

If you buy a new G1 you will receive the OTA update up to three days after the service. It seems to me this is a pretty minor update that won't be generating much excitement, but the Google Voice Search capability could be nice to have.

  • Save Files/Pictures is for Text Messages / MMS

The G1 already has the feature to long press an item to save it except for text messages.

This update seems to have the Cupcake feature of being able to directly save pictures and files from text messages which was not possible except by forwarding to your gmail account or using an App.
