Teen talk: Mal loves Mango and thinks many others will too

By | August 10, 2011, 6:45am PDT

Summary: Microsoft is working on Windows Phone Mango and I have been lucky enough to get the chance to play with a device running this latest software. I gave the Samsung Focus to Mal to see what a teen’s perspective on this new OS would be.

My hands-on with the Windows Phone Mango preview went live in June and since then I have had many readers ask if one of my teen daughters could check out Mango and write up some thoughts. Mal has been using my older Windows Mobile devices for a couple years and after spending about 10 days with a Samsung Focus loaded up with an early preview of Mango she can’t wait to get her own Mango phone and finds this to be the most exciting device she has checked out yet.

First Impressions

The screen is quite soft and smooth. The phone has a durable, sturdy feel to it, not too heavy. It is a little on the bigger side, but not inconveniently large. The camera is small and out of the way. I love the OLED screen too, very bright and clear.

Hardware thoughts

Lock Screen: The lock screen allows for personal photos as “wallpaper”, or a large selection of 28 default choices. I mostly used pictures that streamed from Facebook as the background. Also, it may be customized with a security password. It displays the date and time, battery life, as well as reception status.

Navigation Buttons: Located on the left is the “back arrow”. Center is Microsoft’s main symbol, taking you to the home screen. And on the right, is a magnifying glass, that takes you to the Bing search engine. A feature I didn’t use at all (I’ll have to show Mal how the new Bing functions act as a Shazam-like client and more).

Camera: It’s the standard 5 mega-pixel camera, which takes pretty clear shots. I took a lot of photos, and some good clear video. You can access the camera without having to unlock the screen by simply pressing and holding the exterior camera button, located on the right side of the phone. This was a very useful feature. You can look at the camera roll, albums, the date you took the pictures, and pictures shared through Facebook by your friends. Albums from Facebook are automatically uploaded to the phone. Something I liked very much, because it allowed me to use it as background screens and to show friends.

Software thoughts

People (Contacts): Within the People square on the home screen is displays random pictures of the people in your contacts list. When you click on it, it goes to a list of all your Facebook friends. When sliding to the right, it show the latest NewsFeeds from Facebook. Upon sliding twice to the right, it shows the most recently contacted or viewed people. I used the People feature many times to look at recent Facebook status’s and creep on people’s profiles. :)

Mail: You have Hotmail, Gmail, and Yahoo to choose as a dominent account on the phone. Although it allows to have more then one. All regular emailing features are fully functional, except more server specific ones such as “Starring”, “Important”, etc.

Messaging: This phone has the conversation set up with different colors and many icons (smiley etc.) I used text messaging very much and loved the keyboard!

“Me” Square (Live tile): This one is where you can go to access all social networking sites, such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, POP and IMAP. I only used the Facebook account, and when I click on it, I can post a message, check-in, or chat. Sliding to the right shows my latest notifications, and sliding again shows my profile and latest posts. I used this feature a ton to check notifications, and post a status update. You can not look at the NewsFeed through this avenue.

XBox LIVE: Shows my personal avatar on the box, seen in the home screen, moving around and appearing frequently. Through this feature you can play games from the MarketPlace, edit your profile, look at achievements, and edit your avatar. Clicking on your avatar causes it to do different poses, dances, and other actions. You can also look at friends and check messages from here. I didn’t use it too often because you can only edit your avatar so much, and the MarketPlace had minimum selection of free games.

Now: A very awesome app on the phone. It allows you to check updated weather, news, and stocks! You can personalize this with location, and favorite stocks. I used it daily to check the weather and news.

Settings: Here you can customize ringtones, color theme, access Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, edit lockscreen and accounts, and several other things. I changed the theme a lot, because there was such a a wide choice of vibrant colors.

Other: I didn’t use the Zune feature at all, because I use iTunes and don’t have a Zune Pass. I didn’t use the calendar, due to no need to keep track of a schedule while school is out this summer. I didn’t use any “Office” documents, though a cool thing to be able to access on a phone. I only used Maps once, very handy, but as I am not driving yet, I don’t quite have a need yet for it. Calculators and alarms were also of no use to me. It has a long battery life with 3G network, and a battery saver allowing for an extra hour of life when close to dying. The device battery status also informs you of battery life remaining. Very useful.

What’s missing and final thoughts

There are no notification, or indicator lights. You must turn the display on to the lock screen to see if you have any notifications and to make sure it’s charging which I found to be a bit of a pain. I had to frequently check my phone to see if I had a text, email, etc, and would like to have a better system.

Overall I thought the Samsung Focus with this new Windows Phone Mango update was an amazing phone, I really loved it! I would recommend it to anyone looking for a simple, smart, social phone. Windows Phone 7 is my new favorite operating system and I can’t wait until my Dad gets me one of these, hopefully for Christmas (hint, hint).

Matt’s closing thoughts

I watched Mal using the Focus and could tell she was very excited about using the device. I spoke to a guy at a recent meeting and he said his T-Mobile family plan has four HD7s on it and I think when Mango is released I may be upgrading a couple of phones on our family plan to Mango phones. I know I am sold and won’t give mine up.

I would love to see Microsoft roll out a family plan for the Zune Pass, similar to what they have for the Xbox LIVE family membership. Mal didn’t get to try all of the excellent Zune features, but she did get to experience her avatar on the phone.

You may recall that Mal and her sister, Danika, took a look at the Microsoft Kin devices last year and found that device to be unappealing. Given that the Kin was targeted to the teen/youth group this was not a good thing and Microsoft quickly killed that project. As you can tell Mal loves the Mango update in Windows Phone and she confirms what I keep saying to people and that is, “You need to try Windows Phone before dismissing it just because it has the name Microsoft associated with it.”

But aren?t teens the target audience for Windows Phone 7 phones? With all the Twitter/Facebook stuff, I think teens are the primary audience.
@Rick_Kl

Not really...I'm 33 and love WP7. I'm not a facebook or twitter guy but the interface is smart, quick and easy to use. Best phone OS to date...unfortunately people have been brainwashed into believing Android and IOS are so great. My take is these two Operating Systems are Antiques! Android aside Apple's design is boring and too common for me. I like variety! We don't all drive the same cars.
@rob.sharp@ Just because you are not the ideal target, it does not change the fact that the phone is geared to teens. Which group has a majority of its members on Twitter/Facebook/myspace? Teenagers. So you might not be the ideal age group, but that will not stop them from selling you the phone. I own a Playstaion 3 and I am also in my early 40s. The Playstation 3s target audience is mid 20s to early 30s.
@rob.sharp@...

And I'm 59 and totally agree. If you have an option look at an iPhone and WP7 phone side by side. The WP7 phone will be lighter, more robust and won't need a case. Then look at the screens, fonts and layout. Once again, WP7 is streets ahead while Aplle and Android look like something out of last century.

Pity Mal didn't talk about Bing, as I've been blown away by the Local Scout, audio and visual search and voice search.

While the People integration and Xbox may appeal to teenagers (and me also), it's the business design and Office integration that are important for the more mature of us who have jobs and a career.
@Rick_Kl

Actually and as Microsoft has mentioned several times before, the target audience for Windows Phone are mid-30's and called life maximizers, whatever that means. Go Google it:

http://www.gadgetell.com/technologytell/article/confessions-of-a-life-maximizer-windows-phone-target-customer/

And this honestly makes sense because while it has integrated facebook, twitter, and xbox, Microsoft has designed the phones to aggregate data (online, local, work, facebook, twitter, linkedIn) and simplify our lives. Facebook and Twitter happen to be popular right now, which makes them most visible. It misses the point though. Tomorrow, it may aggregate data from multiple places to make your work easier. Windows Live on the back-end is doing all this heavy lifting and agregating data, pictures, email, social, xbox work and then trying to present that to the user in a logical, easy to consume way that doesn't require you to open multiple apps for consumption. IPhone and Android may be all glossy with big app stores but after using Windows Phone for the past 10 months, it would be really hard to go back to IPhone or Android because while they may have more apps or features, the level of integration and aggregation that WP7 delivers and promises would be hard to duplicate on another platform. Also, by the way, I'm a mid-30's life maximizer

@randian I believe Mal is Matt?s teenage daughter. Asking for her picture is a bit sick, if you ask me.
@Rick_Kl

I don't think its sick if he's a teen also. but I just think it's a bit disrespectful though
This is why I like your articles. Because you actually give the phones to someone who is not a techie and have them evaluate it so we can get a real perspective of it. Its a great review.

likes Win Phone? Color me shocked.

The rest of the world will yawn and buy their Droids and iPhones....
@itguy10 Before you dismiss it out of hand, maybe you should spend a little time playing with one. It is better than Windows mobile6.x, but in my opinion not up to the same level as Android, or iOS.
@Rick_Kl - itguy10 is a well known ABMer who lives for and loves to bash anything from Microsoft, regardless of how good it may be.
@Rick_Kl I really like WP7, it beats the heck out of windows mobile 6. I like the approach WP7 takes that isn't Android's or iOS's. To me, Android is like Windows mobile 6 was (you can do all kinds of things, but it won't just work), iOS is like the feature phones were (everyone has one and it only does what it does), and Windows Phone 7 is like Blackberry was (this is THE phone that works and gets things done).

Its a shame she didnt try the Zune functionality.
Waucckhewww Updated - 10th Aug
Its a great experience on the phone and PC. It really makes me wonder why people put up with itunes.
@Waucckhewww Because iTunes is quite convenient. If you get rid of the commonly known extras on Windows. On OS X it is about the best application for movies and music.
@Rick_Kl

But that's OS/X. So few applications that saying one's the best, doesn't really mean that much wink
@Rick_Kl

All the people I know who has Macs hates Itunes. Itunes is a crappy application on both Windows and OSX
@Waucckhewww - I wonder if she knew there was an FM radio receiver built into the Zune stuff. Don't need a zune pass to use the radio. happy
@Waucckhewww

Agreed. I despise iTunes and so do other people. When I went in for my upgrade, in the matter of an hour, there were at least 5 customers who came into the AT&T store, who were put off from upgrading their iPhones due to "I'm wanting to move away from iTunes". So it's not just us, there are others too.
@Waucckhewww
They do so because of lock-in, some with apps as far as smartphones, but with media, it's just the default for most younger people.

It's due to most having iPods; you can't sync your iPod with the Zune software, now can you? Of course not.

It's part of the problem that Microsoft tried to address with the stand alone Zune devices, but as we know, they never really took off in the marketplace, dominated by zillions of third party manufacturers making every kind of accessory you can imagine for i-Everything.
Social networking sites "pop & IMAP" ?. ?
Is this a bogus article ?
The phone sounds really lame to me, but then if you are going from windows phone to this it would be a step up.
Have neither of you seen an iPhone or Android phone I wonder ?
@FreeTibet I wonder if you have seen / actually used a windows phone happy
@animageofmine1

Probably not. Otherwise they would know that all smart phones can use POP3/IMAP to access many email services.
@FreeTibet it is integrated on WP7, no apps required, it is ready to roll and just works.

Some of you sound like true Apple people who have drank the apple koolaid. You wouldn't even think of anything else. Open you mind, smell the roses. There's a great big world out there. WP7 with Mango is better then any Phone OS out there.
@bkimsey@? There are more people that drank the Microsoft koolaid. They wouldn?t think of using anything other than Windows, and by extension; xbox, Windows phone, Zune etc. I am sure you will always find a fringe group that are diehard Zealots for just about any product/company.

One Zune pass is almost a family plan. It is good for three PCs and three non-PC devices like the WM7 phone.

@jreuter Unfortunately for anyone else in my family I already have my Zune Pass accounts full with my Zune HD and rotating review WP7 devices.
@jreuter Windows PHONE 7. Come on, people.
@jreuter Of the families i know, 3 and 3 isn't enough. My family has 2 adults and 2 young children with 2 xboxes, 2 desktops, 6 laptops, 4 Zunes, 1 Zune HD and 2 WP7. I don't think we're THAT out of the ordinary... We all listen to the same music and build our own playlists, however a family pass or just more devices would be nice as i'm not happy that i have 4 zunes colecting dust and have to switch computers every 30 days depending on work vs. home environment.
My two teenage daughters had an iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS respectively. After five trips to the Apple store (3G replaced twice and the 3GS replaced three times), the one with the 3GS was frustrated because every one dropped calls and such. I looked on Craigs list and found a used HTC Surround and LG Quantum and migrated them over. They both now prefer the Windows phones over thier iPhones, and the only thing one misses is the Facebook chat that is coming in Mango. I haven't even updated thier Phones to Mango, and they prefer them to the iPhones.

My Girlfriend and I both have a Samsung Focus and we love our phones as well. The 3GS was her's until I got my Focus and then after playing with it for a couple days, she wanted a Focus. I keep showing them different things in Mango (in the car they get a kick out of beating me to say "Read It" before I can say ignore) and they all keep bugging me to upgrade their phones to Mango.
It has been many, many years since I was a teen, and I really like my current (Focus) Windows phone. I really look forward to Mango. I have had many smartphones by now and the Windows Phones seem to function logically to me - not perfect but then I am the only one who can design one that is perfect for me. And you probably wouldn't like it.

I know this does not relate to phones but rather to a desktop pc but there is nice replacement for iTunes. There is a plug in for Windows Media Player that allows you to sync to an iPod (and possibly to any other Apple related device.) I was always having problems with iTunes so I deleted it (and Quicktime) then downloaded and installed MGTEK dopisp. I have not regretted it.

Now I can only wish that someone would create a suitable replacement for Flash. In this ever changing world of apps and hacks one cannot set on thier laurels for too long without some backlash.

Take it to the streets.
eingoluq 11th Aug
Okay, next go up to a random people on the street and ask them to try it out, Let them tell you what phone they use and ask them their opinions compared to the rest.
How does iTunes have anything to do with the Zune hub on the phone? You can still sync tracks from iTunes onto your Windows Phone. Was she keeping it on vibrate the whole time? I'm always aware of my calls/texts/etc because I hear the notification. Also, the HD7 has a battery indicator light; apparently the Focus doesn't?

Otherwise, great stuff.
WP7 Mango is the best phone os I have used yet. All the nice functions like facebook and chat built into the os experience. The os is also smooth and easy to use. Good stuff.
I have a 16 year old daughter whom I was recently on a trip with. She forgot her phone charger and since it was a proprietary charger, could not use what I had with me. She used my Focus (Pre-Mango) and loved it. With the Facebook chat coming in Mango she is starting to want one.

I am curios though about your daughter saying there are "no notification". I understand about the battery, when you plug it in, it shows that it is charging, then the screen goes off (which I like), however you can set up notifications for text and email in the pre-mango. Does this go away with Mango or is she referring to something different?
I have HTC Surround, what is this "Now" Tile/App? Can i have it?
What is the Now app she talked about? I have been using Mango for a while, but do not have this app. Is it something unique to the Focus?
@jebailey1120

I believe it's a Samsung application pre-installed on all Samsung WP7 phones. Your phone must not be a Samsung.
The funny thing is I LOVE almost anything microsoft(don't get me started on Windows Vista or WM>=6.5). I am eighteen and have the mango update on my HTC trophy. While I understand that Microsoft is targeting late twenties to early forties with Windows Phone I've seen a person who was in his late SIXTIES by looking at him, and he had a windows phone 7 device. Honestly microsoft needs to let the hardware vendors target age groups and realize that their job is to NOT be like apple and take FOUR versions of your operating system to give us Backgrounds. Please Microsoft, Allow for Backgrounds by WP8, PLEASE!!!! I mean dumb phones have been doing this since the first color-lcd was put in one.
@zuneratheart

...what do you need backgrounds for on the home screen? Since you have usually more than 6 or 8 tiles on your screen, background will be totally covered and useless...
