Verizon iPhone 4 available on 10 February, mobile hotspot included

By | January 11, 2011, 8:24am PST

Summary: Yes, the iPhone 4 is coming to Verizon. Unfortunately, it is the same device that launched last year on AT&T.

We can all finally stop talking about the rumors of the iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless as they just made it official on the Verizon site. You will be able to pick up the Verizon iPhone 4 for $199.99 for 16GB or $299.99 for 32GB starting on 10 February. Current Verizon customers can sign up to reserve one before they are available to everyone else, starting around 3 February.

While this is great news for Verizon customers who want the iPhone, there is nothing special about this iPhone 4 compared to the AT&T one released last year. However, there may be a mobile hotspot feature that AT&T has not provided, but we will have to wait to find out more about this option and what the fees will be for it. There is no LTE inside so no support for simultaneous voice and data. As has been pointed out numerous times here on ZDNet there are plenty of reasons to think twice about this iPhone as the market has changed significantly since 2007 when the original iPhone launched. Sascha Segan put together a great post on why the iPhone 4 on Verizon is no mobile Messiah that I recommend you check out.

There is no information on monthly minimum pricing, but you will be required to have a Nationwide voice plan and a data plan to buy the iPhone 4.

ah, the anti-apple pundits...

... are out in strong force today to find reasons for people not to buy the iphone on verizon. please people don't buy it! don't fall in apple's trap. it's old tech. no 4g (or whatever they call that bogus claim du jour at the moment), no usb-port! no whatever!

please, dear readers of zdnet, don't buy from apple, buy an android device from one of our advertising partners instead!
Now it is really interesting to see what happens Motorola's exclusive Partnership with Verizon on Droids. Does Motorola have guts to release Droid II, Droid X series on AT&T and other networks. I don't think they have guts. Also it would be interesting to see who would lead the Smartphone sales Android Vs. iPhone. I want to see iPhone on secondary carriers like Cricket in addition to primary carriers like Sprint and T-Mo here in US.

IMO, this slows down Android's growth in US.

I do not want to get locked into old tech for 2 years. I'm waiting for iPhone 4G or perhaps another 4G phone.

@tverdich

4G is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy overhyped... And so far, it is nothing more than a marketing buzzword that is being beaten into the ground.

The iPhone is going to sell like wildfire on Verizon... People want a device they enjoy and people dont enjoy Roids unless they happen to be tweaker-geeks. Everyday consumers don't want a pain in the butt Roid, they want an iPhone.

So is the iPhone. Don't get me wrong, I have an iPhone 4 and I like it. It does what I need it to do but when it comes down to it the iPhone 4 compared to other phones running other mobile OSes such as Android & WindowsPhone7 offer pretty much the same functionality. Also this may come as a surprise but I am on the AT&T Network and it works well for me. I do not drop calls, I get good data speeds, and good signal most places I go. Comparing it to my parents and sister under Verizon with a DROID X and an original DROID and my brother on Sprint with the EVO I have to say it is pretty much comparable.

Does anyone know if the iPhone 4 will be available to Verizon customers who are using their prepaid plan?

Voice or Data
tverdich 11th Jan 2011
Having to chose between voice or data will be the issue for people transitioning from ATT. I use apps that require a live data connection all the time while on the phone. That is my biggest issue with vzx 3G. Less droped calls will be nice though.
Yes 4G is new and hyped, but remember you will be on 3G for 2 years if you sign up now.
