Verizon Wireless announces Samsung OMNIA and HTC Touch Pro

I purchased and then reviewed the Samsung OMNIA after a trip to Singapore in September. Today, Verizon Wireless announced the OMNIA will be available starting tomorrow for US$249.99 after a US$70 mail-in rebate and 2-year contract. I paid over US$700 for my OMNIA just a couple months ago and can't believe this subsidized price. Phonescoop already has a video tour of this impressive Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional device.Verizon Wireless also now has their version of the HTC Touch Pro available, but take a look at the specs before you pull the trigger on this model.

I purchased and then reviewed the Samsung OMNIA after a trip to Singapore in September. Today, Verizon Wireless announced the OMNIA will be available starting tomorrow for US$249.99 after a US$70 mail-in rebate and 2-year contract. I thought we would see this on AT&T first, but I guess with the recent AT&T Fuze release they didn't want too many touch screen focused Windows Mobile devices in the pipe at the same time. The OMNIA is a major powerhouse for a Windows Mobile Professional device and it is good to see Verizon kept the specs intact and they include:

  • Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional (touch screen)
  • Marvell 624MHz processor
  • 3.2 inch 240x400 touchscreen display
  • 5 megapixel camera with face detection and SmileShot support
  • WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS functionality
  • VZ Navigator navigation software solution

The press release doesn't state what size flash drive is integrated on the device, but let's hope it is the 16GB model.

In other Verizon Wireless Windows Mobile news, they also now have the Touch Pro available for US$349.99. However, Verizon did slightly change this device from what we have seen from other carriers with a reduction to only 128MB of RAM. This could be an issue with the TouchFLO 3D and running lots of other applications, particularly the 3.2 megapixel camera. The device is also a bit blockier than other Touch Pro variants and has yet another keyboard configuration. Check out Dieter's excellent Touch Pro comparison to see all the differences.
