Which would you choose, Sprint HTC EVO 4G or Verizon Motorola Droid X?

Summary: The Google Android super smartphone news just keeps getting better and better with Engadget getting some hands-on time with the upcoming Verizon Motorola Droid X that rivals the Sprint HTC EVO 4G. Which of these two would you choose from?

SHARE:

As readers here know I picked up a Sprint HTC EVO 4G on launch day and am pretty happy with the device. I called to cancel my Verizon account with the Palm Pre Plus and have about three days left before my contract ends and I am charged the $290 ETF. I was all set to be pleased with the EVO 4G on Sprint and then Engadget had to go and get my fickle smartphone mind all messed up with their Motorola Droid X preview and now I may have to return the EVO 4G and stick with Verizon and this lovely device.

The Droid X looks and has specifications very similar to the EVO 4G with a 1 GHz processor, large display (4.4 inch vs 4.3 inch on EVO), HDMI out port, 720p video recording capability, and 8 megapixel camera. Swype is preloaded on the Droid X along with 8GB of onboard storage and Android 2.1 with some kind of Motoblur UI. There is no WiMAX radio or LTE that we know of, but the hardware does look pretty amazing. Make sure to check out the full Engadget photo gallery for some sweet photos. I have not owned a Motorola Android device and have had several HTC models so I am a bit interested in trying one out and would like to avoid that Verizon ETF. Then again, I do have decent 4G coverage and Sprint offers more for less in their plans.

If you had to choose between the Droid X or HTC EVO 4G, which would you go for?

    Got an EVO. No regrets. The back of the Droid X is fugly and the chin is too big. Plus, I like HTC's track record with Android.

      @wormdood@... I think your reply is very typical of an idiot lacking in grammar.

  • getting bigger

    so the geeks get their way and smartphones are getting bigger and bigger instead of thinner and smaller. hence defying the whole concept of portability. now we're already at 4,4". waiting for that 5" smartphone brick. oh wait a minute, it is coming to a giant pocket near you soon. a totally clueless pc box assembler is producing it.

      you can still get an iPhone and spare us the unnecessary trolling.

      besides, who defines the limits of the size of a portable device? you?

    • iPhone is a brick compared to my HTC Touch Diamond

      Cue the double standards...

      • HTC Touch Diamon is thicker so it's size is only 4% less, it can do nothing

        comparing to iPhone 4

      • iPhone 4 isn't out yet

        So I'm comparing it to the only iPhones that people can currently use. And those iPhones are bricks.

        Also, the dimensions are more important than volume. An 8x11 piece of paper has a fraction of the volume compared to an iPhone but even something as bulky as the iPhone will fit better in your pocket than that piece of paper (without folding it).

        The HTC Diamond is way more portable than even the iPhone 4 because its dimensions are better. iPhone is a brick, even the iPhone 4.

      Why would you want phones to get smaller and thinner? The smaller the screen goes, the more screwed up it gets! You wanna know why? I'll tell you... Smaller keyboard, smaller text n stuff, and well... ya get the idea. I am choosing EVO because of the screen size being better than the tiny iPhone.

    I chose the EVO. I am very pleased with both the phone and the service. I am also saving $100 per month vs at&t.

  • EVO 4G is 63% bigger than iPhone4, DroidX will be like 80% bigger than iPh4

      @denisrs
      no, the right way to see it is that the iPhone is 63% smaller than the Evo and 80% smaller than the X which make it useless for web browsing and movie watching and serious gaming etc...
      for me, the iPhones screen is too small.
      but if you are looking for a phone that you are gonna be sticking in your pockets most of the time, then yes, those are too big for you.

      @denisrs YOU are an idiot. Of course it'll fit in your pocket. Quit exaggerating people, if it were for people like you, things would never evolve, or progress..

    Evo hands down. No front facing camera on the X along with no 4G network. Also doubt that the X can talk and do data at the same time. Its a no brainer, Sprint wins hands down.

    Also, Sprint has better value for current price plans with Unlimited data plans. Verizon is shortly following suit with AT&T to terminate unlimited data plans.

      @iceman7718
Verizon hasn't made any announcement about changing their data plan limits or charges yet. It has never been "unlimited" -- it has a 5gb/month cap -- and there has been no indication that they will be changing that anytime soon.
What Verizon has said is that when they implement LTE -- they would change the data plan structure for those using LTE.
Also, AT&T never really had "unlimited" data either (there also was a cap -- they are reducing it to 2 gb/mo)
